Council tax bill is confusing Mike, don't understand it properly myself yet, my bill has my name and my wifes name on it so assumed, thanks for setting me straight.

The question then becomes - how do I get my name added to the bill if I am staying with a relative? Or is it only possible for couples to be both named?

I have never seen anything anywhere which addresses that question though it is obviously important for returners who stay with relatives until they sort their lives out and get a place of their own. That may sound like a bit of an obscure case - but I suspect it happens with many, if not most, returning emigrants.

Curious to know which bank this is with. I'm living with relatives and we went to Natwest last week, who won't accent verification from my relative (who has banked with them for donkey's years). They did accept it when I opened an account 6 years ago, but the anti-money laundering legislation is quite strict now.

Both the Halifax and Santander bank were fine with this. You still need something with your address on it though.

Is there anything to stop someone from simply changing their mailing address (on existing expat country statements) to a UK address?

There are specific docs that count as proof of address, a counci tax bill, utility bill from UK and drivers license. So changing address on something from US wouldn't work.

We did that with our US HSBC credit card bill, it comes to the UK house (I changed the address a couple of months before the move) Dh used that as proof of address for the bank along with the letter registering him at the local doctor. He had other stuff too, no utility bills as we weren't paying them in my mothers house. I think he had a letter to go to his interview for his NIN with him as well.
