Many people like the crusty old geezer because he often suffers from bouts of foot-in-mouth disease - telling British students in China that a prolonged stay over there will result in them developing slitty peepers. The old salt does not suffer fools gladly by any stretch of the imagination but what is truly great about the bloke is the way he has always been very supportive of and protective towards his wife, the Queen. There is no doubt whatsoever that the Queen could not have carried out her strenuous schedule in the way she has without Philip there behind her over all the years since their marriage way back in 1947.
Whatever your Royalist sympathies, or otherwise, you have to give both of them full credit for that.
In contrast to other marriages within the Royal Family (which some detractors regard as being quite dysfunctional) over recent decades is the enduring strength of the relationship between Philip and Elizabeth.
The Duke was driven (in the front passenger seat) from Papworth in Cambridgeshire, to Sandringham, in Norfolk, this morning, the journey taking an hour in mild winter sunshine, and is now with the rest of the gang.
Both he and the Queen have a very heavy schedule ahead of them in the New Year - both will travel all around the UK, visiting as many locations as physically possible, in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee - 60 years on the throne.
It's quite likely that on their travels around this island nation of ours they will encounter the Olympic Torch, also being transported to as many locations as possible all around the UK, prior to the grand opening of the London Olympic Games - London Twenty Twelve.

I've never liked that phrase "doesn't suffer fools gladly.." All it means is, you are labelled a fool, just because someone is rude to you!! Bit unfair, really.
