I'm never buying any pets from a pet shop again.

... only to be replaced by more animals who are waiting to be sold. If there's no demand, the pet shop won't be in business for long.

There's plenty of animal shelters and non-profit animal adoption organizations that have unwanted animals. Pet shop animals are bred to be sold.

I definitely wont buy an animal from a pet store and strongly discourage others from doing so. Most of my friends have dogs from shelters or bona-fide breeders.

Domesticated rats, not the ones you find in your house or on the street. Domesticated rats are altogether a different class of rat.

Check out my ratty pics in the Photo Gallery.

It only encourages more dogs to be sold that way. If no one bought them from a pet shop the market for them would dry up.

A good dog breeder wouldn't dream of allowing their puppies to be sold in a pet shop.

To the OP...yes the poor things are kept in the cages overnight...most of the day too.

Most people don't have $300 to plunk down on a full bred pet either. So what's the answer? I hate seeing them locked up too, but how else do they get to find homes?

I know at our local Petsmart, all the cats and dogs there are fostered, so they go home with people at night. I assume the birds, & rodents stay there.

The only dogs and cats Petsmart sell around here are from the animal shelters or as you said they are foster homes. They are usually brought to the store on a Saturday or Sunday. I'm referring to the smaller pet shops...normally located in malls and strip malls. They normally keep the animals in the store 24/7.

There must be some slightly different laws up there, because I've never seen a pet shop in a mall. Without having seen one, I have no idea of the conditions they are in. But it does sound like it is far from ideal.

If that's the case go to the local animal shelter. Alternatively there are organisations that foster certain breeds of dogs...pedigree dogs that for one reason or another have lost their home.

Buying puppies from pet stores only encourages more puppy farms.
