Re: Nowhere like England at Christmas time
My husband is spending the best of times having a lovely English Christmas & New Year with family and old friends. All the traditional stuff going on. He's loving it.

What part of England are you yacking about; England isn't just one homogenous place. Christmas is different in London to, say, Somerset or Yorkshire, and they talk funny in Somerset and Yorkshire, and everywhere else in the UK come to that. You could equally say, "There's no place like New York at Christmas" and speak just as much truth.

You both still have 9 hours of 2012 to bite away
We're not bothering this year, staying in watching some normal TV, not planned anything special to eat, but have a nice bottle of plonk in the fridge (then again, I always have a nice bottle in the fridge.) Figure this way, it can't be a let down.
Happy 2013 everyone, hope it's a good one

The thing I found myself missing was Boxing Day, I found it strange that is was all back to normal life. I love leftover day and going to visit the relations. Christmas Day in Sheffield was just colder, the family over here know how to keep the Christmas spirit and a great time was had by all.

Spent a week or so in Jerusalem once at Christmas, there was deep snow on the ground for three or four days and it was pretty cold.. Bethlehem is just a short bus ride from there.

I had the pleasure of being in kid in a few countries, and I remember Germany doing it well. You were pretty much guaranteed snow where we were too, and it could cope with it.
Aberdeen & the surroundings were nice too - we would always go to Tyrebagger forest to get the tree.
Christmas in Newcastle = Fenwick's Christmas Window. A proper Geordie tradition.
Houston tries, there are some spectacular lights (www.christmaskaty.com) but it is fighting a losing battle I'm afraid.
