Default National Insurance number Interview

Hi there I'm new here but I thought this would be a good place to get some advice on moving back to the UK.

Ok so I have lived in Canada for the past 11 years, I'm now 22 years old and want to move back home, it won't be a permanent move, but its something I've wanted to do for the experience. Anyway so I am a British citizen but as I was too young when my family and I moved, I never received a national insurance number. I looked up the site and know you have to go to an interview to prove your right to work in the UK. My question is can I pre-arrange this interview before I move? I am planning a visit in May and thought I may be able to get that process over and done with and simply use my aunts address for them to send it to. Then when I actually move (probably in the early fall) I will have one less thing to worry about. Or am I just better off getting that all done when I move?

Hi CloudConnected, welcome to MBTTUK. I tried to do what you're suggesting when I came back to UK on my recce trip back in 2010 and was told I'd have to wait until I was back in the UK to live. It's not a difficult process, you just contact your local JobCentre and arrange your interview appointment. Wait times vary depending on where in the country you're doing this. When I was home for my visit I contacted the JobCentre in my home town in South Tyneside and was told I'd be looking at about 4 weeks but as it turned out, when I came back to live it was to Kent and I was actually able to get an appointment in the Canterbury office the following day. You just need to take your passport and birth certificate with you (they take copies) and you have to complete a relatively straight forward form. Whole thing took less than half an hour and I had my NIS card in about 10 days. Just one question....have you got your Canadian citizenship?
