Moving to Liverpool?

Hey all.

I'm a 23-year-old Informatics Engineer currently living in Lisbon, Portugal. I started my professional life in last October and I'm planning on moving abroad in a near future, along with my girlfriend (a 24-year-old Veteranian Medicine finalist).

As I am a big fan of the city of Liverpool, I really want to know more about the city: what's it like to live there, job opportunities (specially in IT and Vet areas), house renting, best areas to live, weather, and all that you find relevant, in order to "convince" me that moving to Liverpool would be a great move by us.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

This is a bit like the Houston thread on the USA forum - Liverpool seems to be one of those places that people either love or hate.

I don't like Liverpool. Every time I see someone from Liverpool interviewed on telly or appearing in a documentary, they seem to be whining about something or other. I have been there several times since the 1980s but wouldn't live there if you paid me.

My ex girlfriend from many moons ago was from Liverpool...i love the place..maybe it was because i was from Essex so there was always plenty of good humoured banter that flowed both ways between me and the locals whenever i was in town...i haven't been to Liverpool for 20 yrs now so im guessing its changed a lot?

Re: Moving to Liverpool?

Ive fond memories of Liverpool and scousers, although I grew up over the Mersey on the Wirral back in the 1980s. It was a nice part of the world, although I was living in the expensive bit where half the footballers live. Id certainly consider it if moving back to the UK. The city itself has much to offer and is on a managable scale, it has more georgian period archetecture than anywhere outside London, which I guess is a hangover from its prosperous port past.

I think the area gets a bad rep from people that dont understand the history and culture. The people themselves are (generally) decent and funny.

The weather benefits a bit from all the rain falling mostly on the hills of North Wales, compared to say Manchester.

As a place it does polarize opinions. Go visit if you haven't already.

I was born on the Wirrall many years ago. I still love the area, and the comment about banter is spot on, achingly funny people. But also chippy, argumentative and self righteous.
Live on the Wirral which is full of lovely villages and work in Liverpool would be my advice.

Since you are so close to Liverpool (couple of hours flying) I would take some time off and go and see the place - visit some estate agents for rentals, job centres to see what jobs are available, walk around the city, rent a car and take a look at the surrounding countryside.

You're asking about the weather (?)

What about job opportunities, particularly in IT and Vet Medicine?

You'll need to go online and look at an employment site. You can type in the job you are looking for and search by Geographic area. This is the only way to find out what the job situation is currently like.

You really need to visit a place to see what its like. People can have very different opinions about things so you can only see if you like it if you go there. Wanting to move somewhere because you support the football team is probably not a good basis.

Liverpool university has a really big veterinary department which is located on the Wirral. I am from Aintree and moved to the wirral in 1990 after 30 years in North Liverpool.

I am biased as it is my home town and as they say there is no place like home.

Just discovered I may not get to see the grand national and can't place a bet online over here in the US.

Although Liverpool is my home & I'm back to visit on average once every other year since I left the UK - I have to agree with you 'its a place the locals would like to leave' & 'outsiders want to go to'.

On a global scale I would give Liverpool a 5.5 out of 10

OP, in addition to what others have posted, I suggest that you make a visit first to see if it offers everything you are looking for other than football

I dont think he said anything about football.

But if he did, he should consider that the waiting list for LFC season tickets is about fifteen years, perhaps more by now!

Family rifts have been created by who inherits their dads ticket!

Of course, he may be a blue... takes all sorts.

ianK of course, no mention of the football, only that he was a fan of Liverpool, whatever that means. Part of living in Liverpool is footy & as you hinted to, you are either blue or red. Grandad was blue, I'm red.

As for the waiting list, well that's another story.

The OP posted that he needed to be "convinced".... which could be they have never been to Liverpool

I took it to mean he was a fan of Liverpool, the city.

Have never been there and don't think I ever will.
