Why not use a travel card that you top up with GBP from you bank account in Canada, the conversion is done when you top up. So when your in the UK you are drawing out the GBP you have already purchased.

Quigs I might look into that, but it sounds like we'll have to put a certain amount on it before we leave? The problem is that we have no idea how much we'll need until after we get there.

I agree with others that transferring the money from your bank account in Canada is the best bet. Just a word of caution though, rent through a reputable estate agent instead of renting directly from a landlord. If you do have to pay several months up-front, that's a lot of money to deposit directly in someone's bank account.

Fingers crossed that you won't actually need to pay 6 months up-front, not all estate agents require it.
