Before I start please be aware this is just my experience and is not a reflection on Canada or Canadians in general. We just told friends that we are selling up and moving back in early summer next year got the usual things have changed yada yada. Then I told them how over 30 years my experience here has been less than noteworthy.I came to Canada 1989 with my family Scottish humour intact and seeking the good life .Got a job and after about a month noticed one of the women in the department wouldent speak to me ,no good morning etc.So I approached her thinking maybe I offended and was told no hmmm. This was the start of 30 years of misery where my co workers would continualy either be chatty chatty with me or give me the cold shoulder.I soon found out no workmates here i was used and abused for the next 30 years.I stood up for myself countless times but in the end that takes its toll and in my last year went off on stress leave. Our friends asked how could you work in that for 30 years .Hey bills and mortgage and a doggedness not to be beat.Retired now but the bad taste lingers. So if you wonder why I dont like it here walk in my shoes.Again not a reflection on Canadians I have met lots who are lovely nice people this was just my experience.Warts and all glad to be going home wish me luck and God Bless you all..........Joe

Hello, I was moved by your post. My aunt had a similar experience in Australia where she was "sent to Coventry" by her office colleagues (she had no idea why or what she had done to offend them), and worked for years under these conditions as age was against her finding another job and she wanted to hang out until retirement (government job with good pension). How awful this must have been for her and yourself. I have spent the past 12 years in USA, and the working environment was very different to the UK. No real friendships made, everyone socially correct but no depth between colleagues. Returned to the UK in January this year and friendships made from previous jobs in the UK still strong even though I've been gone 12 years. Glad I'm home!

I'm so sorry to hear that your experience was so bad. Did you not ever change jobs?
I'm fortunate, we've had 53 very positive years here in Vancouver, and still counting. There is no way I would go back to the UK now.
I wish you well in the future, and hope that England comes up to your expectations.

As I stated in my wee rant this is in no way a reflection on Canadians in general I work part time now as a school bus driver and work with great people .This was just to tell about my experience with the workplace, and not everyday was bad and not everyone I worked with was bad either. But a core number of individuals who should be ashamed of themselves made it a toxic enviroment and not only for me.For my part I just got tired of the constant drama and standing up for myself. In the last year when I announced I was retiring one individual kicked it up an notch.Even apart from being soured I would still go back to Scotland cant take the heat or cold anymore and constant homesickness.Actualy spoke with someone I worked with and said I was going back he said I always new you would. So again not a rant against Canadians just my own experience in a new country.......
