International Adoption and UK Residency/Passport
Hi,
Does anyone know where else I can find some clearer information about applying for UK residency and getting a UK passport for an adopted child. Quite frankly the UK border website has no clear information and even when I emailed them to ask them they still did not answer my question. You also know it's bad when an immigration official at Heathrow Airport, kindly goes out of there way to help you try to find this info out, spends nearly 45 minutes searching online calling the border agency and still has no clear answer himself!
I currently live in the US and we adopted our daughter from China a few years ago, and she now has US citizenship. I thought I could apply for a UK passport and residency like I did my biological son...but oh no that is way too easy! I cannot find any clear information on any government site about how to get her UK residency and passport everything is conflicting. Some sites say I need a Hague Convention Agreement Adoption Certificate, but China was not part of the Hague Convention Agreement when we adopted her, another states she has to apply as a Chinese citizen (and there is no info anywhere on how to apply as that on the UK site), another part of the site said I need to readopt her in the UK. Has anyone else gone through this bureaucratic mess? We have all of her international adoption paperwork, we just have no idea what forms to fill out or what to declare her as!
Thanks for your help and time.
Alexis

pleasure & from the British consulate in the USA. After you've digested the lot, suggest that you give the Brit folks in the states a call telling them that you want to register your adopted under 18 child as a Brit

Particularly the MN1 form

Re: International Adoption and UK Residency/Passport
Hague Convention is only relevant for automatic acquisition of British citizenship through an overseas adoption.
The "normal" way is registration as a British citizen before age 18. As long as the adoption takes place in a country whose laws are recognised by Britain, it will normally be granted.
There is no flexibility on the age limit of 18. Not possible to apply later if the opportunity is not taken.
