Reading all these posts of folks going back to UK is making me think of doing likewise! Still not right time for me to do so..

You wouldn't have to go through immigration again in the UK because you'd be coming in through the common travel area.

I seriously would not just shop for one way flights. That's limiting your choices. I've been reading immigration boards for donkey's years and most immigrants buy round trip fares. They just don't use the return leg!

I did return flights when my sons moved over, then a few weeks before the return flight I called and cancelled the return part and they refunded me the taxes on the ticket (which was a lot!) this was with BA. I did it so there return part was dated off season, so cheaper.

Well just out of curiosity I contacted Dublin Airport and received this response:

Thank you for contacting Dublin Airport.

In regards to your bag being sent on to your second flight you will need to contact your airline about that information.

Secondly, Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland. We are not part of the United Kingdom. Dublin will be the first EU (European Union) country that you touch down in. You will need to clear immigration in the United Kingdom upon arriving into Manchester Airport.

The blue part was in bold so they were definitely reminding me they aren't part of the UK ROFLMAO

So still confused but guess I will find out more when I check in at the airport here in Phoenix because I'm pretty sure they'll tell me. It's possibly going to be a United flight to Chicago and then Aer Lingus to Dublin and then Aer Lingus again on to Manchester.

Not according to the email I just received from Dublin Airport (see earlier post).. LOL But keeping my options open and looking at return flights too. The only problem is that because of the delay with my passport, the money that I kept in the bank to cover my airfare and some spending money is rapidly dwindling. I've had to get groceries and a few essentials..LOL So now I'm left to either getting a one way for under $1,000 or exchanging some of my much needed GBP back to US to cover the gap. :(

Don't ask them at Dublin what you will do in Manchester. Email Manchester if you want to know for sure. I just took a look at Manchester's website and I can't clearly get you an answer. But at Heathrow, there is a separate clearance area for people transiting between the UK and Ireland. And this shouldn't just be "airport policy" as the CTA and rules governing it are the law.

I'm about 99 percent positive that you won't have to clear immigration a second a time. You might have to go through passport control, but that's it.

WhoFan, I've just spoken to an old and dear friend who lives in Scotland. She is 81 and was Matron of Harris Chldren's Home in Preston where I was raised. I'm finding it very difficult being so alone in the US trying to deal with my brother's recent death. I've been thinking for a while of going back just for a few months to get away from it all. Not sure I could move back to UK for good but I think being amongst friends and family for a while would be good and help me a bit.

I know how you feel and I am so sorry about your brother's death. I recently lost my husband and he was the reason I came to the US. So I don't feel like I want to be here anymore. I don't have anyone here, and didn't really make any close friends while I was here. I'm sure you'd have a good time when you do go back. But as others have posted, family and friends often don't seem to have time or want to get in touch once you get back. Which is why I am going back for ME, not for the reunion with family. I'm think you should do it...and re-connect with everyone you can and see for yourself. Sending you a warm hug :)

yes for now I'm looking at it as something I need to do for ME. I will be seeing people like my sister who was adopted by family and I've not seen since I was about 7 years old. We recently connected when she learned my brother was so ill. I like her very much! I also have reconnected with a cousin who meant a lot t us both when we young kids. I have kept up some friendships in UK but don't expect their lives to stop for me. I just feel it something I need to do. I know I will return to the US as I like my career opportunities here. I have a lease until August though so if I do do this will need to wait. I don't want to pay for place that is sitting empty. I have a dog and if I decide to move to UK for year will take him with me - if not will leave him with a lovely woman who loves Jude and takes him to dog park every day. No matter what I do my dog will be with me but we just may be apart for a little while. I wish you all the best and I also think the place you will rent is super! I'm lucky as I will be able to stay with folks for free but will of course pay my way.

Well it definitely sounds like it's something you should do, for no other reason than to replenish yourself and catch up with everyone :)

May I ask what airline did you book? I think it may be American as you are flying out of Chicago?

I haven't booked yet because I'm just waiting for my passport, so I'm just checking fares, departure times, arrival times and layover times at the moment.

But so far the best choice which if still available to book in a week will be:

Phoenix to Chicago (United)
Chicago to Dublin (Aer Lingus)
Dublin to Manchester (Aer Lingus)

One way for $728.16 :D
