yep Cindy's right...its a way of saying Homey...warm colours on the walls...my knick knacks around me...lovely big fireplace and big squishy sofa and armchair...a place where you look forward to coming home to and curling up on the sofa with a good book..thats homey and cosy...

When I read "homely" I think of our definition - essentially "ugly". I'll feel a bit better now when reading about hotel rooms that are described as homely.

My British learned vocabulary has helped me out recently. I was speaking to Air New Zealand and they read out my flight as "N, Zed" ... and I was only puzzled for a minute before thinking ... OH! Zed = Zeee!

Now I know of course that the two countries aren't the same but the influence definitely seems to be there!
