Dunno! Do people really get so mixed up about where they're living and why they're living there? Can't say I've ever really read much in MBTUK. I might start.

It shows not everything is all rosey when you do emigrate. I blame the UK media.

Think I left well before it became fashionable. Watched a couple of those programmes courtesy of UKNova, though. The US ones are very unrealistic since they never mention the visa problem -- so you get folks coming over thinking they can just buy a property and go from there

I just so happened to come across this thread. Honestly I can't understand what all the fuss it about. And while I am at it, whatever happened to free speech? Is one not allowed a divergent view. Is one to be so overly concerned lest some here get upset? Aren't we all supposed to be adults.

This is not kindergarten!

There were no swear words or obscenities or hate comments being used so why on earth should anyone take offence? If some of you obviously super sensitive types do not care for Howard writes then either mount an intelligent debate or simply ignore him.

Banishing Howard serves no purpose.

Would you expect intelligent debate if you walked into a Glasgow Celtic pub in Rangers colours? I think that would be classified as provocative behaviour, not expressing a "divergent view"

I think most people on here can handle opposing viewpoints, but I think the problem comes when you have returning expats who are often in a very sad way and people come on here deliberately trying to bait them in an unnecessarily provocative and belittling way. It's just not necessary and the poster isn't really looking for intelligent debate but to stick the knife in and twist it around.

Nothing wrong with free speech within reason.

In principle I would agree with your comment. It makes perfect sense.

In fairness I ran though, yet again, all the posts on this thread paying particular attention to those of Howard. His comments (on war brides and his not-too-subtle reference to hubby as being the one who makes the major decisions and his reference to his family's wealth) might just have annoyed a few here.

But honestly so what?

To ban him from this sub-forum was, in my view, heavy-handed and needless. He attacked no one person nor did he use bad language. Yes, he might be seen as a bit of a sh*t disturber, I do not question that. Point is I do not see that he baited or provoked or insulted anyone. he didn't stick in a knife and twist it around.

At least that is not my perception.

I myself have strong views on many topics and do not hesitate to express them. True, I am not always the most tactful of persons but I tend to say what I think. If all agree here with one another and are super polite and gracious, sympathetic and understanding then this place becames sterile.

I contend it should be possible to have intelligent debate as opposed to summarily dismissing a poster as some sort of 'agent provocateur' or a troll. Howard obviously has strong views and in my view it is more useful to show an opposing POV, not simply give up on a poster because he/she doesn't sing from the same songbook as most others.
