If you have worked in the UK before you will already have a Nat Ins number, but you can request it from DWP, you should register with a local health centre, they can find your NHS number, and you should register on the electoral roll ASAP. Not sure if there is an actual checklist anywhere, but doing those things will get you started.

Sign on to utility companies, service providers, etc. for electricity, gas, water, television Get a mobile phone contract and landline if not part of your TV package. Inform HMRC of change of address if you have been submitting tax returns.

We are leaving the UK for a while and will most definitely NOT have a landline when we return and will not be using BT for the internet either due to overall cost.
I have a Skype number on my computer, with a Tunbridge Wells area code on it - costs about $16 per quarter.

Electoral register. Council tax. TV licence. Arrange for your mail to be forwarded for a set time, if possible.

We thought that we would need a landline and signed up for one along with our BT internet package but BT recycle phone numbers and 90% of our inwards calls are nuisance, principally directed at the previous 'owner' of our number who was, it seems, on a suckers list.

Indeed you need a landline link (except apparently for Virgin Media) but you now don't typically have to pay for it under new rules. We'll check with uSwitch when we return for the best deal and we won't bother to put a phone on the line as there is no expense to try and justify
.IF we return to Weymouth (more
), I'll have to use the library(card), a Virgin Media dongle and Wetherspoons until we get hooked up.
