Actually the colour of the yolk depends on the food source.
Egg yolks are not naturally golden. Pale yolks can be just as high quality.
Gold yolks has been used as a marketing (advertising) ploy for many years which is why food supplements are used to produce that colour.

More to the point, what size are the birds themselves, if the chicken breasts I buy locally are anything to go by - they're f****** hooooooooge! Must be some genetically modified superspecies. I remember seeing Jamie Oliver's programme on chicken rearing and the new modified breeds that are bred to get masive in about 32 days - I tell you, I don't think I'm buying organic here.

Our US hens produce lovely big brown eggs with bright yellow/orange yolks. What we have noticed in the Spring when they eat a lot of grass the yolk gets more luminous and stronger tasting.
Poor little Aussie hens must be living on dry feed and have no grass and bugs to eat.
Store bought eggs here always seem to be white shells and pale inside, unless you spring for the organics or free range.

I have always bought free range or fresh farm eggs, but recently I read an article from the RSPCA which said that 'barn laid' eggs were better.

yeah, part of the problem is that producers have used consumers growing concern about stuff like ethical treatment of chooks, as a way of sneaking in a price hike without really changing the processes in any great way. the law on this is deliberately vague.
in order to proclaim yourself as a free range producer you actually only have to allow the hens the OPPORTUNITY by way of access, to roam. the hens can be in the same environment as a battery hen, with the doors opened. the hens are so atrophied they can't move if they wanted to.

worked in the uk for the major european egg producer in the engineering team. the food industry is all smoke and mirrors. a famous high street name is effectively the industry regulator but turns a blind eye to ensure supply whilst paying lip service to standards etc.
