I do agree that there's sometimes a flush of excitement when you first arrive here (let's not forget the people who hate it on the first day and want to leave on the next plane). But I think it's lovely to hear about it and live it vicariously. I'm an old hand now having been back 5 months and, while I love it to bits, that first crazy excitement has gone. I enjoy Tel8's posts because she brings the feeling back.

That flush of excitement as you describe it is one of the best things about travelling and moving overseas, and it's rather addictive. I have felt it a few times and yes, it is an equally valid part of the journey, certainly. I know it's only a matter of phraseology but for me the "Australia is wonderful" expression is not quite the same thing as "I find Australia wonderful", if you see what I mean. The implied objectivity of the former is almost declarative and invites contradiction, whereas the subjectivity of the latter is more respected and easier to accept I think. So a number of posts written in the style of the former can start to look ridiculous, I think, whereas the latter is always safe.

Ah, I see. To be honest I'm not sure why it invites contradiction though. If I don't think to phrase my sentence "I love England" and instead say "England is great!" isn't it just implied that I am speaking subjectively? How could I not be?

And by the way, I do love it here and it is fab

Looking forward to hearing more Tel8. My son did something similar, taking a TEFL course in London for six months. It will be interesting to compare your experiences with his. He also spent three months in a northern town which was a totally different cultural experience to London ( his words ).

Good luck and I hope all goes well.

I tend not to read blogs...so IMO updating this thread would be best.

In England we have pubs....beer gardens are for Germany...Bavaria especially

How do you find Dawlish? It is one of the places I have been looking at for retirement

I just meant my BE blog! It's hosted by the forum :) and I haven't actually posted anything about my return yet though <-- fail

I see what you mean Zen10, it doesn't do to gush too much, but I really am serious when I say that something about this country makes me feel like I'm doing what I should be doing, and I'm where I need to be. I have bad days- I won't lie, I hate my hall at Uni for example, and have been trying to move since I got here, but other than that, I love the UK. It's like being home after a really really really long trip. I've pretty much settled so firmly that I'd started to get annoyed and frustrated when I didn't have perfectly ordinary things like NI numbers or bank accounts. I felt like I ought to have had them- and then I remembered that I'd only been here a week or something like that, and of course I wouldn't have anything like that set up.

Quite simply put: being here feels right. It feels so right that I don't always remember how long I've been away for or how short a time I've been back. I don't intend to gloss over the problems and issues that I've seen here, in fact, I want to get more involved in the community because I feel like it's home now, and home means being a part of things.

Real quick: I've got a new addiction to that show "The Paradise"- has anyone else been watching it or am the only silly one obsessed with 'costume dramas'?
