So funny to read other expats find the "accents" in their birthcountry funny sounding too! I am originally from Holland and moved to the UK 8 years ago. My ears must have adjusted themselves to the English language over the years as whenever I go back to Holland, the Dutch language sounds totally alien to me. Especially the intonation is very odd-sounding!
I find the news readers hilarious and just cannot take them serious anymore. And I crinch when I hear certain really strong Dutch accents. Even worse is hearing the Dutch speak English - as my husband is English most of the Dutch are very polite and will try to speak at least a few words of English to him. However, this now sounds to me like any English comedy sketch about the Dutch and very unfortunately reminds me of the Bounty (??) kitchen towel advert with "Audrey" washing the windows in the red light district! :curse:
On the other side, I sometimes get very frustrated with my own accent. Not many English can tell I am Dutch - most guess Irish (no idea why, I don't sound anything like the Irish!) or American. Yet when I go back to Holland they all tell me I have an English accent and I am struggling more and more remembering the correct words and end of stringing a sentence together half in Dutch half in English, much to my mother's dismay!
I guess with me from Zoetermeer in Holland (near The Hague) and hubbie from Bristol, I really have no hope ever speaking with a normal accent!!
