good luck to your trip home

Hi Juliet

I know what you mean...I will miss this sunshine..not the unbearable summer one but this lovely winter one!!with no flies, no humidity..ohhhh and the big blue sky!!I also feel at least going home we get the best of both worlds...cheaper to come this way than from Oz to Uk, for hols I mean. Will make sure we see the bits of Oz we never got a chance or could afford to see whilst living here.!!

When are you heading home??

Cheers
P

As some of you may know I am really struggling to decide whether to go back or stay here.

It's heartening to read the positive stories from some who have already moved back. You hear so much negative stuff about UK from people who have always lived there. All fuelled by the sort of media hype that's already been mentioned ("A Place In The Sun") etc.

At the end of the day they do have a point and I still don't quite know what to do, but I am inclined to think that ones family, culture and past history has to be more important than things like weather and houses?

A lot of people are telling me otherwise, but they've not emigrated like I have!

Hi Pants and Juliet

Feeling rather jealous now as we have both agreed that we will stay for the two years to get our citizenship - just in case we change our minds later. Have you guys waited or are you sure that this is definately a no go?

Have you got room for a rather chunky one in either of your suitcases?!

Hi everyone

We live in Florida and have been here since the beginning of this year for an initial year.

After much deliberation (and bad luck since we have been here) we have decided that we should go back to the UK. My husband hates it here as we have no social life and left a lot of close friends and family back in the UK.

My question is because we have a Corporation registered here with the State of Florida, is there anything we need to do before we go back (like see an Accountant here) as we have earned very little since we have been here. Can we just return to the UK before our visa runs out very early 2005 or does Immigration have to be told? We do not wish to retunr to the Visa conultant we used to get over here who is in the US.

I am here on an L1 visa and my husband an L2. We both have social security numbers and my husband has recently received his work permit.

We don't the best place to go to find out this information so thought someone who has already done it would advise us.

Many thanks

Hi Amanda

Don't be jealous we are in major dilema at the moment...more stress!!!Our house has been on market since May and still has not sold. WE have dropped it all in all $45,000 in that time. I have a paid ticket to leave here on 18th Aug with our daughter(21/2), ( my ticket is flexible)the plan being I get us a rented place back home and buy us a car. We are planning to rent a place with my mum back in the Uk for a while and so thats why I am due to go. It will take time to check out places with my mum etc as she needs to get out of her rented house by beginning of Oct.She has no-one near her to help her either....

I also am trying to sell my car here which will allow me to buy car in UK..and we have been let down by a buyer here for that too.
My hubby is also due to get made redundant (yippeeee extra money) and now his boss has told him it's been put on hold.
So now our stress levels are sky high..

my car needs to be sold to buy car in UK
hubby needs redundancy to pay for container and to fly dog back
hubby's car needs to sell to allow for his ticket back and pay some debt here..

But most of all our house really needs to be sold or else hubby will have to stay on and if he gets made redundant he will have to get a temp job and we will be apart for how long????

We thought about renting house out but it really won't help that much at all as we would have to go back to UK and send a big amount back to pay the extra on the mortgage, credit card and a small loan we have.

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......heeeee llllllllppppppppppp

phew...so thats our major problem at moment..what to do!!

But what is it really like to live there long term?"

To really change lifestyle, we now know that it matters far less where you live, but how you live.
Too true! About the programs, couldn't stand them as they don't show real life.

Mike is absolutely right. I'd even further that - you also need to live in the country where what it offers is conducive to how you want to live.

cheers

Hi Pants and Amanda
we are booked to go home aug 29th still having serious doubts as would have loved to got citizenship but our 15 year old starts gcse in sept so crucial time for him. Hubby is telling his boss today just hope we are making the right decision for all of us.
Husband has only been working 3 months and i can tell you it hasnt been easy but the important thing is that as a family we are all sticking together.

all the best

Hi Juliet,

We went through this too and it is only natural! We do not have children to consider so perhaps that made it easier but we will desperately miss the weather (even the summers!!!), the beaches, the outdoors here etc but all that has not made us happy. We made up our minds, then changed them and then changed again a dozen times a day-it got to the point where we said, right, what do we want out of life, what is going to make us happy-we have to make a decision by this date-and we did and we now fly out 5th September!-we can not wait and feel so much better after we made the FINAL decision!!

Good luck with it all-go with what feels right. It is only natural to have doubts-we like you started having doubts after we had breakfast out one sunday and saw loads of dolphins below us in the marina area!!

I have to say that I can agree with the things that you will all miss weather, beach, lifestyle etc. Australia is a great place and if we do go back I will miss lots about it. I think the things that I didn't take into account when we moved out here were;

How far away it is! I know that sounds stupid but we hadn't been out here first and it is a bloody long way. I don't regret not coming out here first though as we know several couples that did and are now very disappointed re: house prices etc. I don't think it would have put us off - the distance I mean as we needed to do this and would have regreted it if we hadn't.

How much I would miss friends and family esp friends and also my previous work friends. I find that it is difficult to find people with a sense of humour here - although I admit that I do have a rather black sense of humour. Have made quite a few friends here and people here are so friendly and genuine - but somehow it's just not the same as you don't have the history to draw on.

How much we would end up spending on a house!! Although we have sufficient to move back without selling it so would probably leave it here and rent it out. Still feel Australia is a fantastic place and would always want to come back but maybe later on and for a few months at a time.

I am still jealous of you guys that are flying over the next couple of months but am commited to getting citizenship to ensure that we can come back. Hope it all goes well for you all and trust that you will post your news on the forum.
