6 months on...
Hi everyone,
Well i've been back in england for 6 months now (i was only in oz for 5months!), things are pretty much back to normal and it's almost like it never happened. Only a very few people call me mad for coming back to england and now im back, im not as anti antipodean as I was when i returned (i've started watching neighbours again!). How have all the other re-pats found live back in the motherland so far? Guitar doctor- are you still browsing this forum? Im still attracted to this forum daily, I dont know why! I suppose because it's something i've experienced and can relate to. Keep up the posts people. Wilko |

Hi Wilko
beem back since Xmas..also still addicted to site! Love the UK, happy to be back (came back to have baby otherwise would have stayed in Oz longer..not sure how long tho). Thankful to have family at time of need with new bub. Still love being in the countryside, the greenery, the spacious feel of life here (I'm in Cheshire) - always felt claustrophobic in Melbourne. We have been quite Oz-sick and have talked about going back. We've had to weigh up all the pros and cons AGAIN and at the mo, the fact that we are now on one salary means we couldn't afford to make triips to the UK very often. and we don't feel this is right for us, the baby or the grandparents. Things that we really miss about Oz are my sister and friends we made there. Don't miss the noisy city, pollution, long hours, short holidays, etc Oz doesn't outweigh UK by any means - each has a huge list of +ves and -ves, so we've decided to bide our time and stay here for a couple of years at least (and perhaps we might have settled down by that time!!) Where in UK are you? Where were you in Oz |
Im in kent, near to canterbury, i live near the sea and it's nice place, i've got no complaints.
I was in perth. I was really at the wrong age to go (19), so i wasn't in school or college and really didn't have anything in common with my aussie peers, who only seem to be interested in surfing and cars. Maybe it would have been different if we'd gone 10 yrs ago when i would have been young enough change. My brother, who is 15, also hated it and hence, the whole family (6 of us in all) came home. I don't know if i'll ever go back, i dont think i will, but you never know what will happen in the future. |
hi there wilko

But what is it really like to live there long term?" To really change lifestyle, we now know that it matters far less where you live, but how you live. |

The UK is so much more diverse and interesting. We can accept the bad because the good is great. Glad to hear you are happy and resettled. |
Just wanted to say this is so nice to hear from all that have returned so far. I know some people regret being back but thats to be expected..

It will be nerve-wracking and stressful for a while, but focus on your goals. :lecture: If it all goes belly-up in UK, you could always go back to Oz and live with the in-laws  :D xx |

Hi Dobbo
How long have you been in Aus? What are your reasons for returning? We live up the road on Bribie Island and have been here since Jan, we are struggling - at least my daughter and I are. Am beginning to think that we will be going back - it's just a question of when. Amanda |
hi Amanda
we have been here 8 months , and have four boys the eldest hates it here and has only one friend and no social life(15 yrs) also our second son is dyslexic and it isnt recognised in queensland and it is very hard trying to get his teacher to understand his limitations he just doesnt get it. We have booked to go back August 29th but after having a great weekend now having serious doubts . Our younger two boys love it here and the youngest (8) is giving us loads of reasons why it is better here it is a very hard decision to make juliet |
Hi Juliet
I can totally understand your situation. I have two children and my oldest - girl of 11 is now on her second school. She was bullied in the first and hated it, we are now paying for her to go to a local private school. It is a struggle as we are at present on one wage (previously on two in the UK) and our mortgage is twice the size. I have got my son - 3 into Kindy one day a week and he crys for the whole day - wish that they would lie to me and tell me he is OK! Hollie - my daughter just wants to go back and is quite often upset. I miss my job, friends etc and feel the same. Paul my partner however likes it here although would go back if we insisted. It is interesting that you are having doubts after the weekend. This is something we have found, with the good weather and lots of cheap or free stuff to do the weekends and time off are enjoyable. You can really have a good time over here for next nothing and after the weekends we are generally all in a good frame of mind. After 2 or 3 days working though my partner is normally in a foul mood (leaves at 5am and gets back at 5-6pm) - has to go to bed at 8.30pm and Hollie is ready to throw in the towel!! I on the other hand - having worked all my life feel my brain disintergrating before my eyes but here on Bribie and without family support feel that I can't go back to work. Have you booked your flights? Did you get a good deal? Am tempted to go back for a visit this year with the kids as it wouldn't effect the time taken to get citizenship but can't afford to pay masses. What's Albany Creek like? Amanda :scared: |
Hiya Amanda and Dobbo
Just wanted to say that you are not alone..and even when I feel that times here are good and how sad it will be to go I just try to take a long look at the reasons "why" we are going back..I know other forum members who had doubts before going home...Sorry I am not trying to convince you to go....just that I too have highs and lows about it all. Most of us have... Anyway there are plenty of us about to chat to...well actually I lied quite a few are now already back home in Blighty..!!Good luck with everything Pants :) :) going mad from nothing going right !!! |
Hi Pants
