AB got to be the worse prices ever, we will not buy an apartment for $500.000 CND' my sister called me today to tell me there is a 5 Bedroom home with large conservatory/ large garden and all the works great area" just come on the market for 149 BPS i dont have the pound sign ?

We will not invest here in Canada like tableland said its all way over priced' because of Oil ' and jobs are plenty fold'
But as its been said there are lots of reasons for wanting to return to U.K and yes its not going to be cheep cheep cheep'
I think where ever you live if you happy you can make things work' as for family and friends getting bored with my tales of happiness and woe" is not my reason for wanting to return, they already know of my life in Canada' happy days sad days"
The idea is we are going to return to make it work for us' not my family or past friends' to be honest i would be quite happy and content to have a garden where i can grow some veggies' something that has a difficult time coming out of the ground here as its so dry' so jolly ole me is looking forward to the return' We have thought about it long and hard and looked into the pro/n/cons' we are not being influenced by our emotions.
We just think this change will work for us' life is what we make it
A past post i read' a family had a bad experience here in Canada and they returned to u.k with nothing 'they lost everything' homeward bound they went and sounds like they have turned over another page' with help and support of family and friends' so the idea is move on try a new avenue start afresh.
Good Luck to Everyone in what we do 'that WE think is for the best'

One comment. Someone said house prices and rents are falling. I don't think that's the case. People have to live somewhere and if they can't afford a house, they're looking for a good rental. Competition drives prices up.

On fitting in, the wise old advice is "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." No point trying to make everyone around do as we're used to doing. If we emigrate, we're moving into a different culture as well as a different bit of geography.

I seriosuly doubt it, unless it is a repo. Five bed houses with large gardens even after the crash are still going for 250k min in the south.

Any links?

That's not the way it works. You might have noticed that many peopel are now refusing to sell their houses and are going to let them out instead. In addition to this you have repos and BTL investors dumping their properties on the market en masse, all of which brings an over-supply to the rental market. Suddenly tenants can choose from dozens of properties i neach town, and this competition drives the prices down.

Think things abroad make your hair go grey? Try petrol at £1.30 a litre (£5.90 a UK gallon!), gas prices are going up 35% soon, in addition to the 15% increase in Feb, in addition to the huge increases last year etc etc. House prices are falling but mortgages impossible to get (mortgage approvals down 70% from this time last year), home repo's up massively, food bills up.

I'm sure there's a similar situation in Canada but are you looking back through rose tinted specs? Things aren't great here which is probably why so many are looking to get out!

It all reads very depressing' i know its going to be a struggle over in u.k just as its getting in Canada' but there are other reasons for me wanting to return to u.k( lots of other reasons? personal things that i do not post' as who wants to hear about your life beyond the cost of living"

I have elderly parents back in Wales i want to be there for them' i have a son soon to start a family' and also a close knit family and i with my hubby want to be part of it all' the little country town where i am going to live' if i need to go anywhere i will get on a BUS or be transported with my family members' the thought of running a car never crossed my mind"
I think it will work out price wise the same as it is here' if not we have to try to make it work' i am trying to be positive about it all, though if you look into it to deeply it can all become rather depressing.
I think i mentioned in a past post if we can not make it happen over in the u.k then back to Canada it will be.
Maybe it would be better to rent a place' woth repo and morgage difficulties, thats what we intend to do when we get there so we wont get tied into anything to quickly as it may not work at all? i have been trying to look on the bright side of it all' but now i am wondering if we are doing right?

We moved back from Canada and we realised it not that rosy in the UK. I admit £1.30 is expenses for petrol, so we had to buy a TDI cars that do 50-65 mpg instead of a 3.8 litre Ford (People carrier) that did 18-25 mpg at 65p/l
I rather pay 35% increase on a £60/mth gas bill instead of $300/mth heating oil bill.

We still find food cheaper in England relative to my disposable income. In the UK there are lots of discount food stores that you can get to, that you do not get in Canada unless you live in a major city.

We found we changed our lifestyles i.e walk into the town to go shopping. Travelling trips of 20 miles to major shopping areas instead of 350km.

We find its not much different living in the UK than Canada on costs for my family and would say we are better off generally due to lower household and overall car running costs and my income.

If you can get a decent job back in the UK when you return(I found many UK company valued overseas experience), which I found was not hard. You can still have good life back in the UK - just do not become a Daily Mail victim.

Best of luck to those moving back to blighty! Just returned from two weeks in the UK...costly to say the least! Could not afford to move back to Scotland even if I wanted too...

And just maybe people in the U.K are looking through Rose Tinted glasses thinking that life is easier in the "New Worlds"...well all I can say is don't believe all you read or watch on t.v....what you gain in one hand you loose in another..for some it works and for lots more it does not.....I have always though a lot of items were expensive here in Aus compaired to the U.K even when we first arrived....Petrol was really cheap at the time if I remember correctly it was 50cents a litre now it's $1.49 at most places sometimes more over the weekend and one petrol station (the same brand) can be more expensive than the other..and while I know that is a lot cheaper than the U.K it costs me a small fortune as I have to travel large distances each day just to get from A to B...so it's all swings and roundabouts, this is not the reason my family or many others want to return to the U.K and we certainly do not have rose coloured specks on (hence the last 4 years of should we should'nt we return)its for far more important reasons......it's not always a bed of roses wherever you are it's just what you want out of life and where you want it......

I believe in weigh it up compare' it level it out make it work !
I read in a past post when you leave to a new culture and life do as the Romans do' but Rome was not built in a day'
its not been to easy brinigng a Welsh culture into Canada we are way to overfriendly' so you know when to back off' then over the years you start to lose a piece of your own personality' i am married to a great Canadian guy we speak the same language and thrive off each others culture' but surrounding you is a different story!!
Canada is built up from all Cultures under the sun' but when they arrive in Canada they bring their culture and religion with them they build upon a piece of Canadian soil with their own stores and community and they own language' and they thrive here too; But its not all one big happy mixing family' it seperates and becomes very unsocial bringing language barriers too; yes i have learned a lot from all the different cultures and become very knowledgable through it'
I am happy to say that' i am quite proud of what i have learned through out the years!
But its also difficult to find a social life where you fit in' so its not all a bed of roses and when you get older you just become to tired to keep making it work' your kids are gone doing they own thing' i just think i have lost my way here and i want to return to Wales amongst family and old friends' my hubby is happy if i am happy for the time being i think returning will bring me happiness and help me to feel i belong again, somewhere along the way ive lost the plot; its not helped that i suffered a traumatic experience here last year but thats another story?
What i would like to say is there are all sort of reasons for wanting to return to British soil and some of them are to bring back your peace of mind' in one way i dont give a flying fig about the cost of living over there,no punt intended" i just want to get back thats it in a nutshell.

We to might end up with not a "penny to our name" (at the rate we have to drop our house price here in Aus) but we have to give it a go at home....we all want to go......and as you say having family around to just "be there" will be just lovely....I don't want to end up in 30 years time here in Aus
wishing we had gone home when we had the chance...met to many people like that and there stories are sometimes so sad...take care
