So far they've missed a few, but they will surely fill them up in due time.
Doesn't making them more visible discourage speeding?

No, if you can see them from 1000 meters instead of 200 it makes it easier to drive fast and only slow down for them.

Also, the skinny ones, you can tell if they are activated more easily than the boxy ones, as the top "window" will be white (containing the flash) if it is activated and black if there is no camera inside.

I thought conventional wisdom was that when they were 'disguised' speeders saw them later and therefore braked harder, making an accident more likely.

Having them more visible lets people know that they are there and lets them know that they will have to slow down by that point.

This is one of the reasons why all Gatso cameras are high visiliblity in the UK now.

This would be worthwhile if the cameras appeared once per KM of road.
But they are far apart enough that people will hit 170km/h before they need to slow for the next bright orange speed camera.

I heard about that from a friend last night (visibility of cameras in the UK).

In the US, our cameras are typically (although not all and not 'red-light' cameras) well disguised. On one road in Virginia right outside DC they are off in the forest hidden in trees and you have no idea where there are without a radar detector (which are also illegal in Virginia).

However it is still the case that tickets issued through speed cameras are only a fine and do not assess 'points' to ones drivers license, mainly because they cannot always confirm who is actually driving the car.

Do speed camera tickets go on your driving record in the UK?

Oh yes. You score 3 points unless you are ridiculously over the limit (say double) in which case it can be more. Score 12 points in 3 years and you are on the bus for 6-12 months depending on how the courts feel on the day. The registered keeper of the car has to disclose who is driving. If he can't or won't he/she gets the points. Guilty unless you can drop somebody else in it. It is a wonderful system. Not.
