not sure what the whole story is...but apparently salaries now have to go via the Ministery of Labour...has anybody heard anything about this...
we'd normally get the money around the 23rd, but haven't had anything now...

I think you'll find it's the new Wages Protection System introduced by MoL.

The way it was explained to me is that one of the new rules requires your salary to be paid into a Dubai/UAE account. I guess they want to have any cash on their books for as long as possible.

This was implemented at the usual short notice at the end of December, and as my salary gets paid into an account outside the UAE, resulted in nothing arriving. Following a mild mannered complaint on my part, my company has since found a way around this.

No, it's supposed to be for everyone. Designed most likely to enable the UAE Govt to directly deduct Income Tax if they ever decide to implement such a system and/or to recover any unpaid fines but supposedly to ensure that wages are always paid. Any companies not complying will presumably be fined.

It also affects some professionals who use a local company's licence to operate in Dubai. I have to pay in salaries by the 18th of each month and salaries are paid to employees on the 28th of each month.

Suppose once it goes through central banks and everyone joins the WPS, then the country can see how much is being earned by the workforce...which would allow future taxation rates.

We have been told that all employees have to be paid into a current account (ie no cheque payments).

As we have lower paid employees (cleaners, grounds staff), who don't earn enough for banks to 'entertain' them, we have been asked to open new accounts, all with the same bank so that the lower paud emplyees can also open accounts with this bank.

Like you say, I have also heard it may be a pre-requisite for checking peoples income, paying fines at source, and ultimately the introduction of income tax.

quite a clever idea really... although the day they start taxing me will be the same day that I ask for a pay rise or resign!

They have a similar system here in Luxembourg,
If you work for a Lux employer, your salary HAS to go into a luxembourg account.

My understanding is that if you work in a Free Zone your company will be exempt.
