'Standard' Rental Process and Contract?
Hi!
We are looking for an apartment too. Seems, like we are looking in the same area as everybody else, Marina, Al Barsha, Greens. We saw one in the Marina we really liked last night. Then the agent guy tells us, just give a copy of your passport and a check.
We were asking for terms and conditions, contract info, move in date, key handover, etc. All seemed a bit shady. Then he didn't call us back. Sure, he could be legit and have others in line, but how do you protect yourself from a rental scam?

These days, the most important things to check for are that the contract doesn't contain a "one year non-renewable" clause, nor any in which you agree not to go to the Rent Committee or other such body.
Some landlords are trying to insert these now, and their only purpose is to to try and circumvent the rent laws.
If you find these clauses, you can draw inferences about the type of landlord you're dealing with, and would probably want to look elsewhere anyway.
