Budget for extra expenditure in the first few months as you'll want to go out and explore and find your feet.

Regional produce is available. For example, a regional cauliflower is usually a quarter of the price of one imported from further afield. Pasta made locally (there are several factories in the UAE) is cheaper than stuff flown in from Italy.

I think most of us mean regional when we say local in terms of food. 
You can get fruit and veg grown in the UAE itself and there are a few 'farmers markets' that have the stuff for sale, albeit more in Dubai than in AD at the moment.
You can save a lot my shopping smartly. Buy local produce where it's good, go to the Co-ops for household products in bulk and treat yourself occasionally at Spinney's.
