Out of interest, what would you have done if you had liked Riyadh and moved family over etc. ? Would your old lovely comjpany have expected you to work your notice ? And if so, how would you have done that while working in Riyadh ?
Shame about the housing, I'm sure something would have come up people are leaving Saudi all the time (no surprise really ) and there are availabilities on compounds round and about.

Although to be honest, I have no hard evidence to support my impression, just a feeling about how things are at the moment.
Anyway, as I said, hope all goes well when you return.

Yes, this is what I was also thinking when I asked how long you would have to wait for housing, cos its also an impression I have ,that people seem to be leaving Saudi, so therefore creating housing vacancies.

I'd have loved one of the latter ones - to this day I regret not smuggling some out when I went exit-only. You tell people about drinking that crap, setting fire to it etc. and they don't believe you !

I did warn him [as did others] that the salary package he was offered was a bit low. Nevertheless he has taken the risk but it hasn't worked out, especially if he was a wife and kids. Fair play to him, he gave it a bash.
To the poster himself - yes you should try and get a NOC [is that a letter of no objection?] if possible. As for jobs elsewhere in the gulf, you can try but the market is contracting severely and you really are up against guys from the subcontinent who are very, very cheap compared to an expat.
Anyway best of luck - if you REALLY want to move overseas you could always consider Oz or New Zealand long-term.

There are a few boots going into this bloke which is a little unfair. He is a British Expat like the rest of us.

Re: Saudi Exit
Anyway, we ran out of sid so knicked his from his suitcase.
He left for the airport around midnight but came wandering back at 4 a.m. as the flight had been cancelled.
As his bags had been checked in they had to go through the search procedure coming out. He said he was sh*tting himself cos he knew he was about to go to jail.
He puts it down to being a miracle. We never did tell him where it went
