SAUDI - IT Consultant - Banking
Hi,
I am currently considering a possible move to Riyadh. I am an IT contractor. I am an IT specialist in Banking.
I have been verbally offered 10k USD per month "tax free" direct with the client. Is this reasonable? Is it really tax free?, or could I be taxed back in europe? Sounds low to me....
The potential project is very exciting, and the role is also very interesting..
I heard Saudi is a dynamic and exciting economy, with alot going on, a large young population, and a pleasent climate. The European winter is approaching, and the idea of a warm climate, in a friendly country is quite appealing.. Anyone lived in Riyadh before. Is it better than Europe in terms of quality of life?

You don't say where in Europe you come from, but USD 10,000 per month is GBP 5,500 (or AED 36,729). IMHO that's not a bad take-home salary!
As far as the Saudi government is concerned it will definitely be tax-free. Whether or not you may be liable to tax in your home country depends on the tax laws in that country. British citizens, for example, do not have to pay tax on money earned while working abroad as long as they fulfill the criteria for being considered "non-resident" (basically, you need to remain outside the UK for a set number of days per year).
The downside, of course, is that you'll be living in Saudi Arabia, which is a genuinely dangerous place where Westerners are targeted by Islamic fundamentalists. Even without that to worry about, you've got the heavy governmental repression to contend with. If you can handle all that, though, and stick it out for a few years, you'll earn an absolute mint.
