I thought the inside word was that it wasn't actually a new discovery, just one they'd kept hush about from years ago, probably because at the time it was barely commercially viable to develop. So, likely to be in the low hundreds of millions of barrels range at very best. 'Finding' it now was really just a bit of positive PR.

This is what I have also heard from a guy I know who was with DP at the time.

I would say, though, that the range you mention is pretty inflated to what I was told... I'd be knocking off at least 2-3 zeros from your numbers....

The range I suggested was just my best (or not as it may be) guess on what the size would likely be. If it is considerably smaller, which I don't doubt it could be, you have to wonder just how desperate they were that they needed to 'discover' it all over again.
