Ive just said the same thing to my hubby - the flights were double the price to come here for new year, when people have paid that sort of money to come and to find out they cant see in the new year as planned i would be very surprised if the tourist industry doesnt drop even more than predicted throughout next year and i know if i had heard about this at home there is no way i would come here for new year just incase!

Its a nice gesture but in reality madness...?

just heard on the radio that all fireworks, live music, public parties are cancelled...so can people still go out for their dinners they booked, no idea...
also you are not advised to do the normal flagwaving and hornblasting at midnight...no public displays of celebrations allowed...
there will be an updated report at 9.30...

Ah canny - i flipped a coin as to staying in Dubai or going to the rugby club at sharjah - 450dhs, Marquee, suit and frock jobby, all you can eat and drink ALL night, firewords at midnight, fireworks at 4am then if you make it to 6am fry up! as well as DJ and live band.

All the dubai ones were above 1000dhs... ouch! even more ouch now that peopel cant do it!!

There must be something more to this than supporting the Palestinians surely ? Were they planning huge firework displays again and want to save money or something?

Bummer all round really - better pop down to MMI quick before they sell out . . .

I've got sympathy for people who have paid in advance and may lose money, but at the prices the hotels have been charging I have absolutely no sympathy for them if they lose out.

A colleague had paid to take his wife and parents to one of the events in the desert, just been called up to say it is cancelled and they can go on Friday instead. Nice.
