Unhappy Majore fire in Deira - 183 shops gutted

Fire guts 183 shops in Naif souq in Deira. Luckily n lives lost - but so many livelihoods robbed off. Very Sad.

Traders looked in disbelief and sat huddled together in silence as the place where they had earned their livelihoods for over a decade went up in flames before their eyes.

A fire that broke out at 1.45am on Wednesday ravaged the Naif souq, which housed 183 shops selling ready made garments, toys and perfumes.

Hardly anyone has insurance (except for the car...and usually that's the cheapest one they can find).

Would be a great idea if the government made in mandatory for all shop, office and warehouse owners to have some sort of insurance - at least these poor people and those in Al Quoz would not have their lives ruined.

I agree, but it's a catch 22 situation. The poor guys can't afford to pay for insurance but they are the ones that need it!

Only about 10% of the warehouse owners affected by the Al Quoz fire had insurance. Mind you, neither do I ...not House Contents...and I work in the industry.

I thought it was a bit dodgy when one retailer said that he had 360,000 dhs in cash in his shop when it burnt down, bet he had insurance
