We can also thank the Brit's for the Ibn Saud regime, too. But, to be fair to Mr Wilson, the League of Nations was founded on a sound vision, and the concept of the United Nations is, I think, a sound one. If we are to be a "globalised" society, we need to evolve beyond the petty definitions of national identity. {Shakhs leaps up from his desk and starts singing the "Internationale". His colleagues look mildly perturbed, but by now are used to such displays of eccentricity} The UN is basically there as a front to pass resolutions to make it look like its a consensus vote from nations... in reality countries in the UN owe other countries favours for not being able to pay back loans from the world bank. The US is further aggravating situations in the middle east by making the violence out to be nothing but religious factions trying to disturb the peace... but then it's not like they're doing it on purpose to serve their own purposes... just like other super power countries do. The problem lies within the people of the countries that the superpowers are playing with. the politicians are corrupt, the people are gullible to what's being said and hell breaks loose... no one wins in the end apart from the country controlling it all. i agree though, nationalism seperates people just as religion does. however people are lost without something to belong to... everyone wants a family, be it blood related or a national bond... countries and boundaries only exist to make sure that the rich are kept rich and the poor are kept in check... |

Religion and the nationalism attached to it in that region are the major causes! Until religion is fully detached from poilitics there will never be peace in that area. |
Re: The Kingdom
Edward Said (RIP) wrote a very good article a few years ago about America's own identity crisis. It is worth remembering that the USA needs to fight for democracy on its own shores, rather than doing it by proxy on other people's.

however i'm not saying that corrupt policians are just in poor countries... just that developed countries find it easier to play with them... sign up for this loan from the world bank to increase your GDP ten-fold... when it doesn't happen and they can't pay it back it's a case of... oh don't worry just give us a UN vote... or cheap natural resources and you don't need to pay this month... if they don't want to then you get a situation like iran... they owed the US millions but didn't pay it back... anyone want to take a shot as to if the iran bashing is going to continue after bush? |
