Default Hiring a car with an IDP

Is it possible to drive a rental/private car using just an IDP? I am due out in Dubai in a few weeks and have lost my licence. I already have an IDP and have a photocopy of my UK licence. It will take a good few weeks to get a replacement licence sent out to me but will need to 'get about' before i get it.

Not sure, but I assume it'll be for while you're on your tourist visa. I think an IDP is fine then, so long as it has the date you passed your test. But if it's going to be for when you're on a residence visa, then you'll need a local driving licence (you can't drive on anything else once you have your visa), and you need your paper counterpart, and photo ID to transfer it over.
