Default Help! I'm moving to Saudi and lost!

Hi

I'm new to this forum and hope you guys could give me some help and advice.

I'm moving to Saudi soon as my wife will be getting a Nanny job here soon.

She is a muslim, a convert to Islaam so i take it as her husband i will need to accompany her?

Also, as i am moving out there, i have no idea what i will. I am an expereinced banker with 5 years experience in specialist customer service roles and also a microsoft certified desktop technician. Are their jobs in Saudi for these roles and if so how do i go about applying for them?

Also, is it difficult to find housing in saudi as i will need a place to stay if my wifes employers do not provide her with a flat of her own.

I really hope you guys can help as i've found a difficult to find much help on the net.

kind regards

Naz

Woah, indeed....the general consensus....stay away from Saudi unless your a loon, absolutely have to, or have a death wish...

you'll be living in an armed compound for safety....yeah, that's fun.

Agree with Bob 100%.

Miss Behave, until you have actually lived there you have no idea.
PLease search the threads that myself and Tami2 have posted re:Saudi.

Personally i would rather be bankrupt and sleep in a cardboard box than take £120,000pa job over there.

I spent many years there, and after having my compound blown up by militants and watching a westerner get get and killed 50 yards from me...i had to admit enough is enough.

Our 4x4 took a bullet to the side, and it is utter madness to venture outside the compounds.
Our compound had Saudi National Guard patrolling, with tanks and armoured personnel carriers with 50calibre guns mounted on top, and yet we still get attacked.

Even if you are dark skin, being western, dressing western or speaking english is reason enough to be worried.

As stated before, please feel free to cross reference this with posting from other members from this forum who have many many years experience in KSA.

Regards
JD

I know a number of people who have been their and they didnt have any problems. I'm not saying you guys are making things up, just that those i have spoken to didnt have any problems, although most of these were muslim.

My wife is going over as a nanny and her friend who is a nanny has just extended her stay after a 3 month trial. She is not muslim yet she loves it out there.

I am a muslim so i am hoping i wont have too many problems. You get your share of extremists everywhere, yet 6 million foreigners work in saudi, if its that bad why do so many work their?

please explain as i'm a little confused.

could you post the links to the other threads you mention.

many thanks

Naz

Thanks for your reply.

I would in no way tell you not to go, is all i can do is share mine, and other experience.

My opinions are my own and may seem extreme to you but many others share it.

Lots of workers out there yes, mostly exploited asians working in terrible conditions for awful money. (maids, tradesmen, drivers etc)

Westerners go there because of very large ex-pat salaries which are tax free.

Yes there are many there, but you will find out that the turnover of staff is very very high.

by all means, if you wish to go out there then go, tis your choice and at least you can say you have tried it. But being in the wrong place at the wrong time will make it a very expensive mistake to make.

A old friend of mine who use to play football with us, his family sent him back to his home country for universaty, He came to dubai and got a job at emirates but he got fired after 1month.

He didn;t even had a fils in his pocket during his entire stay here in Dubai, he lived on the generosity of his friends for over 6 months. hoping to find any job for any pay!

All fruitless. he was arrested by police and deported.

Apparently an Iraqi I know offered him a Lucrative pay to work in Iraq in a safe enviroment. The salary for him to work in Iraq was X12 what he was hoping for in Dubai. and also he had Rotation after 3 months of Work with a Month Off.

GUESS WHAT?

He Bluntly without a thought HE REFUSED! "NO WAY" (That was his exact anwser)

Now One like me wonders, My unfortunate friend who is a muslim! Middle easter look and attire, brought up in Dubai! ISN'T WILLING TO GO TO IRAQ!!!!

BUT THOUGH, The westerners and Americans (without getting jobs back home) are rushing for Jobs in Iraq!

Now me just bloody wonders!!!!

You see Naz, Its all ABOUT you! what you think, what you feel. If you have the attitude "MY WAY IS BETTER THAN YOUR WAY"

Than I suggest you take your way, and don't bother to go there.

i dont understand though, why is it so bad out there? U have all said to avoid it but you guysd are not giving reasons why, leaving me here in the dark.

Why also, may i add, are so many women going out there to work as nannies?

Reasons:

Political and religious instability.
Lack of social life.
Poor quality of general life outside of western compounds
Risk of death/serious injury.

what more do you want ???

If you want to go..then go.

you have been told the same story by both a westerner and a muslim UAE national.

The choice is yours.

No amount of money in the world would make me go back.....why be the richest man in the graveyard ??

Lots of jobs in many sectors my friend..not just nannies.
This is because everyone is leaving

Look at the facts....
If it was reasonably ok to be there....it would be hard to find a job..and money would not be so great.

See how easy it is to get the same job or money in Dubai/Qatar or Bahrain..

Can I ask what nationality and ethnicity you and your wife are?

It could have a bearing on your Saudi experience.
