Default Driving from Abu Dhabi to Muscat

Hi all,

Has anyone done the drive from Abu Dhabi to Muscat, and which is the recommended way to go, AD to Al Ain and into Oman, or is the route via Dubai and the Hattah crossing better? Heading over at Eid with some friends, in a sedan vehicle, not a 4x4.

Cheers.

I've done it several times - the quickest way is via Al Ain, Wadi El Jizi border post, heading to Sohar, then take the coast road down to Muscat. Takes anthing between 4.5 and 5.5 hours, depending on the border wait and where in Muscat you are heading to.

Cheers weescot - how was the coast road then? Scenic and worthwhile?

"Coast" road is dual carrigeway, with several ornamental roundabouts where the towns are. Watch out for locals/Indians dashing across the road. Isn't actually on the coast - about 1km inland. Bit more scenic going through the mountains.

Far more scenic would be coming back via Nizwa, but it is a couple of hours longer. You can detour up Jebel Shams then - although without a 4x4 you may struggle the last few hundred metres, as the metal road turns to a dirt track - then back to metal road.

rather boring actually.....the coast road I mean....

also goes through a few wadis so doubt it will be an issue, but just pay attention to the water level poles if it does rain.
