Default Dogs?

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice you have given me so far, its been invaluable.

Anyone taken a dog from the UK to Abu Dhabi? How did the dog adapt to the heat and the like? Is it easy enough to find a vet? How much did it cost to transport them. Finally a really stupid question, is it easy enough to find places to exercise them?

Thanks

Plenty of people do - I live in a compound and unfortunately am surrounded by the bloody things. How I love it when one starts barking at night, which then starts the others off and before we know it we can hardly hear the TV.

Particularly enjoyable when the kids have just been put to bed and it wakes them up.

You may be able to tell I'm no dog-lover.

Do you mind telling me which compound you're on Millsy - so I can avoid it when I have to move.
I hate bloody dogs too.

Sorry Oakley!
People do have dogs here so it is doable but as far as I know it is v v expensive to get them here. Yes there are vets, yes there are parks (but please make sure you take plastic bags for 'handwarmers') but that is all I can tell you.
I'm sure the doggy-brigade will pick up on this thread sooner or later to give you some proper help!

Some airlines allow you to take them as excess baggage, they still travel in the hold, but you are charged cheaper rates. THey have to travel on the same flight as you to get these rates.

Let me explain the parks... yes we have parks here but these are generally for kids to play in and for people to relax in and have bbqs. They are not like the typical park in England which is set up for dog walkers - there are no woodlands etc.

Sure, you can walk the dog here, but you will be as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool – also remember that 90% of the population are either south Asians or Arabs and they hate dogs (apparently if a dog sniffs a Muslim it means they are unclean). I've seen a couple of fights break out over dogs getting too near kids playing football etc.

Are you planning on living in a flat? Most of the flats are in city locations - not great for when oodles wants to do his doodles.

I have a friend who has a dog in an apartment - while it is possible, she has to take it to the park at 6am for a shit, then rush back from work at 4pm for more of the same - woofer doesn't appreciate the heat much either and I know she is always getting hassle when she walks it on the beach from people who would rather not see it.

It’s your decision, but I personally don’t think dogs are that welcome here.

it's fine with dogs here...you see loads of people out walking their dogs every morning and evening...the issue, however, if it's a big dog (in dubai at least, don't know about ad) is that you aren't allowed to take dogs into the parks or on the beach, so there is no where for it to go for a run, if it's a little dog, then no problems...

the heat shouldn't be an issue unless you're planning to leave it outside, which would be a no-no...and if you're going to be in an apartment, it's probably not such a great idea...

i've got a havanese-shitsu and about to get another one in november, and we've had no problems...so don't be put off...

MM, xx

Dogs in AD seem quite welcome. One American guy had 7 dogs, including 2 Huskies wrapped around his waist.

There are quite a few park/large grassy areas, one in particular not far from Karama area (there is a Palace there which has some woodland area around it that the dogs seem to like going for a sniff in).

Plenty of people walking dogs at the same time in the morning and evenings, and they don't mind interacting with you or your dog, it gives theirs a chance to socialise I should imagine!

Just be careful of crossing roads (if you're going to just walk the dog locally for a late evening pee break).
