I might need to rent a car for a month and believe this can be done for around 1500 dirham a month? So far they seem a lot more expensive... Does anoyone have a recommendation of which company might be the least expensive?

Try Thrifty in Abu Dhabi - I think their monthly rent for a Toyota Yaris is Dhs 2000.

Don't use thrifty, my company had 4 cars from them, total nightmare, esp when u end the contract, really bad

Thanks for that annacarna. Haven't used them yet but I was just checking on prices today. Avis say that they are not doing monthly hire in AD at the moment - never thought of Al Ghazel.

al ghazal are good, and they seem to have the most stock of cars around, well if you look in their depot off island

Can reccomend Europcar. Very willing to accomodate. I have heard it is best to avoid the local companies even though the rates seem fantastic.
