Yeah in JLT now, I ****ing love that roundabout so much I wanted a piece of it daily.
saw that but you can't always believe that they say in the paper, let's hope it's true. You mean the huge ring road rounabout thingy at JLT?

No, the one in the middle that's generally chaos (although much improved by them opening a bit to divert some SZR traffic).

Anyway, I digress...you're right, can't always believe it but as you say - hope it's correct.

It just goes round and round in my mind all the time that all these people are homeless and only have the clothes they stand up in, and probably don't have passports either.

Surely contents insurance is for just that - contents. If there is damage to ceilings and stuff from something like a water leak I would have expected that to be covered by the building insurance (covered by the landlord and not the same as the insurance carried by the developer/OA)...

Or is Dubai a bit 'wrong way round' on this point?

I have looked at insurance many times here and always err on the side of self insurance for the following reasons :-

1. The number of exclusions in the policies are extraordinary compared to anywhere else I have lived or own properties. Many of the clauses seem vague when it comes to claiming for things like upstairs left the bath on.

2. All of the insurers I have spoken to put very low limits on the things I care about most (wife's jewellery and my camera kit). E.g. I got Axa to offer to cover the full value of my photographic kit in the home, but as soon as it left the building, it defaulted to normal travel insurance type values (usd 3000). My main camera and one lens would have a replacement value of USD5000 even without the rest orthe crap I keep in my camera bag. Same was true for Mrs Shed bling.

3. Friends of mine have had accidents which resulted in claims and the loops they had to o through to get a PORTION of the value repaid was ridiculous.

'Self insurance'? Is that a euphemism for 'I won't bother - I'll just fork out to replace everything myself if the worst happens'??

Official presser from Tamweel (I assme it's the same fire we are talking about??):

Fire breaks out in Tamweel’s offices
Tamweel [TAML.DU] released a press release on the DFM stating that a fire broke out at its head office in Tamweel Tower in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), which was later reported to be contained. We checked with Tamweel’s management and they stated that the fire would affect some of their business as they do not expect to return to their JLT office for another 15 days. Tamweel said that its offices in the building were gutted by the fire. Meanwhile, staff have been relocated to Deira branch; Tamweel has two branches, one in Dubai and another in Abu Dhabi. Management added that they have data back-up outside of the JLT head office. (Company Disclosure)

They must be joking.............

Interesting because I just spoke with the Tamweel Tower building supervisor, who said they were continuing operations from basement level. Meanwhile, he confirmed that all residents are being allowed back into their apartments from 11am this morning to collect personal possessions.

Thank goodness they are being let back in to pick up their gear, hopefully no one lost anything too important

Sorry but I should have said that only residents living on floors up to the 17th are being allowed in this morning. Not sure about those above. I will be meeting some affected residents later today, so should have more news in due course.

Families from the Tamweel building fire in JLT are all left with nothing, most evacuated in their PJ's, no wallets no clothes no nothing.

Some are in Bonnington hotel, others are in Armada tower for the next 3 days till Dubai Civil Defence & Police have investigated the cause of the fire & cleared the debris.

At the Armada tower there is a box for donations of toiletries, clothes, shoes, nappies, formula milk etc. If you are able to pass by please donate any goods you can miss.

Also do call Kishika Jiandani on how you can help (0556188495) if you are in the Bur Dubai area or Bhavana (0505744843), Himani (0505543790) or Pawan Manghnani (0555406936) if you are in JLT, Marina, Discovery Gardens area. Please share and spread the word

They sound charming and very typical of the ill mannered majority who populate this place.
