Default apartment in Doha

My husband is coming to Doha on Monday (2nd April), my daughter and I will be following in 4 weeks.
Ged will be looking for a place for us to stay.

Does anyone have any advice or recommend a certain area/complex?

Got to give the old man as much help as possible!!

You know where he's going to be working?

An approximate budget would also help.

Hmm. Well I don't know where he's going to be working. Yet. I suppose he'll be able to answer that after Monday.

But our budget is QAR 10,000 per month, which seem like a healthy amount to us, from our position of ignorance.
I'm hoping that you are going to say we'll find a decent apartment for that sort of money

We don't know Doha at all, so really our criteria are:

a) we live in a decent (not necessarily the best, but not crummy) area, and
b) we are nearby other expat families, as we have a 2 & 1/2 yo daughter

you would just scrape by with 120 in Dubai for a two bed apartment. Good luck

10K Doesn't leave you much room for manoeuver.

Got a map of Doha for reference?

In general terms, stay outside of B ring, because you wont be able to afford the corniche. I would stay inside E ring otherwise you are out in the middle of nowhere.

West Bay has lots of villas, some are at the cheaper end. I find it quite desolate over that side though. You do have Landmark Mall in reasonable distance. Dont think the appartment options will be numerous over there.

Theres a 2 year massive road building scheme just started at the outside end of Salwa Road, it wil make the locality unbearable traffic wise.

Im at home at the mo, so may get spellings wrong but. I would recommend you stay at the C-D ring level, Al Saad, Bin Mahmoud, Al Muntazah, areas "like" that really. They are the more westernized, nicer parts of town IMO.

I think the classic compounds are out of your budget.

Traffic is fairly shite everywhere, so unless you can pick a place on top of where your husband is going to work. Its not like its easy to avoid all of the bad bits.

Doubt you'll get a 3 bed, seriously doubt anything on a complex =/

Good luck, if you can provide more details at a later stage, I may be able to advise further.

Hmmm. OK.

What if the budget went to QAR 14000 per month?

Would that make a significant difference ??

Hi I am also moving to Doha on the 23rd April with my OH and our three girls, from New Zealand with U.K passports
My husband will be working at the Corniche, I at H.M.C and we have places at the Compass school (until places are available at D.E.S.S and Doha College.)
I have looked at the map, however I would value any opinions on the best places to look for villa/compound . Thanks

Yes, quite a lot. Depending on what your package set up is. I'd print or email a copy of the Gulf-Times classifieds and go and plead your case for a higher housing allowance. If you don't ask, you wont get.

Even up to 12 would increase your options significantly.

I only know of a few compounds by name, we didnt search for villas that much, we dont have family so were not prepared to fork out for them.

However if you have places in mind, and know area names I will most probably be able to advise you of what its like.

At the end of the day Doha is not that big. Which end of the corniche your husbands at my make some difference to the radial roads you're interested in. I would presume he's down at Citi centre end by the financial and diplomatic areas? Dont have my Maharba in front of me either, in London at the mo.
