I've not had that battle, worked for two British / European firms out here. Alright the first was a farce and I was visa-less for ages, but I had my passport all the time.

Would not enjoy being without it under any circumstances. it get's sorted.

This is a shit. To be honest, I'm not sure what you can do in that situation - other than the MoL complain (or at least the threat thereof). I'd never give over my passport long-term if I could avoid it but I see how it happens.

Mine got stuck in the Pakistan Embassy for a month until we called up the Minister...

Anyway, good luck.

I think being able to see your Grandad for the last time is far more important and valuable as a opposed to a job which can be replaced.

The UK consulate can issue an emergency travel document that's good for a few travels and be be issued in a few hours, but costs a bit, almost a couple hundred bucks down my way. No idea how feasible that would be for you or how that would work on exiting the country.

Anyway, condolences on what you're going through and good luck!

I can only see one flaw in this argument

on the flip side, chancers who fancy a week at home and lie about Grannies death don't help - it's awful having to guess whether someone is lying or not when they're stood in front of you crying

Clearly my company feel like this; I've got to ask my mum to fax over a copy of my grandad's death certificate. Just what she needs to be doing right now!

Honesty this has been a nightmare. But provided I can get the death certificate and take the leave as unpaid I think I'll be ok to go.
Just need to get my passport back from HR now; yet another form that needs over 5 signatures

Well, look on the bright side - you won't have to do it again as you will never hand the passport back again - Bukhra is the word you will be using...

Unfortunately some nationalities use this tactic regularly, be it for extra money to pay for (Supposed) sick bills or a free holiday home. I had one guy worked for me for 2 years, 2nd week there his father died so I gave him a week at home. 18 months later his father died again...............

Unfortunately a twuntastard in HR will assume as they would use that tactic everyone would............

I wouldn't be working for them anymore, it's 2013 not 1880

I never turned anyone down but caught a few ( their colleagues take great pleasure in dropping them in it )

I caught one who got a fax to say he should rush to his dying wife's bedside, unfortunatley he wasn't married and got a one way ticket instead

People are unbelievable wankers.

I couldn't lie about Granny dying because I'd be expecting karma to kill her off.
