Default Wedding presents etc

Hi Folks.. I have , what may be a simple thing to answer..

With folks back home in Blightly.. what is the best way they can buy wedding
presents for us?

We thought about Walmart gift cards.. but Walmart doesn't accept CC payments
from outside the US.

Does anyone know of a way that UK relations and friends can get us wedding
( and christmas come to that) presents, ordered in the US on a UK card?

Cheers..

I'm not sure if it's still possible but 2 yrs ago I set up an amazon.com
account specifically to order stuff while I was still living in the UK for
delivery to my US then-fiance. I paid with a UK card. (I also had an
amazon.co.uk account but they would not deliver overseas at that time). So
if there's anything you want that could be bought from amazon.com that might
be worth checking out, I have no idea if that would still work. Congrats, by
the way

We tried to buy UK gift voucher with US credit card and they wouldn't take
it the reverse either. But if we purchased an actual item they did from that
store they would. Go figure.

Possibly Amazon.com would be a way to go and you can register for wedding
gifts there.

Set up an amazon.com wedding registry. Easy-peasey, and it accepted
Canadian credit cards... I assume it would also take ones more foreign
than that.

And some of the stuff might arrive in a gift bag that's big enough to
hold an adult human.... I've personally verified that the big bag holds
at least 1 Jim.

Ask for Cash, its much easier.

Seriously we buy her family all our Christmas presents online from Sears, Macys, Amazon, Godiva and all sorts of other bricks and clicks stores using a UK credit card so why can't you set up marriage lists at Sears and Macys and stores like that.

Otherwise go for the cash - accepted at most good stores and a few crappy ones!

Oh and Jim - I'd be quiet about the smallest man thing - you won't pull the girls! I suggest using some old socks!

When we got married we registered at Bed Bath And Beyond, that way
people from Canada, could see online what we wanted. A lot of our
gifts were shipped to us, and it's fairly easy. I think that you can
even go online and register which is cool. And then all your family
has to do is go to www.bedbathandbeyond.com and type in your name and
a list of everything you registered for comes up. It was great,
especially for family members that weren't able to come to the
wedding. And they have a lot of nice stuff as well.

You could always ask for travelers checks or something perhaps?

American Express Gift Checks

Visa and Mastercards are international. You and your bride to be can register with stores such as JC Penney, Bloomingdales, Crate and Barrel, etc. and they can buy online with their CC and have it shipped from the States to your Stateside address.

I registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond too, because it seemed easier to have a registry in the US. Setting up the registry was piece of cake (I did everything online and then later went to the store and had the little scanner thingie). For a lot of reasons, I had to set up a registry in France too, so few French people ended up using the BB&B registry. However, the few people who tried, one French person in the UK and one American person in France, had problems because they had an address that was outside of the US (if I remember well, it was the address that was a problem and not the credit card). It was a pain in the neck, because they had to at least call the US (and wait, and it is not an 800 number from abroad...) to finalize their purchase.

The registry in France (at a Department store) worked beautifully. People were used to it, the system was awsome, and we could register for a travel (which we did not have to bring back to the US and which we wanted to do anyway...). Then, we had to bring the gifts back to the US, but that was not as bad as we thought it would be. With detaxing, the custom charges are not that bad if you are above your exemption. In the end, this system worked great for us.

I had asked my parents to convey the message that, even thought I had a registry, cash/checks are much easier to carry to the US where we could buy stuffs that we really needed. Some people were totally fine with it, and some other people wanted to give a specific object (silverware, and so on) that they had picked out on our registry and that would stay with us.

Our French registry was not your typical registry, but we did find a lot of things that could travel without being damaged (no china or dishes! but a travel, silverware, table/bed linens, towels, suitcases, travel guides...) and that we needed, and in the end, everybody who used the registry found a gift that suited them.

I complained to BB&B about that a couple of years ago and they promised to
look into it. Our other registry (Michael Round) had a similar problem where
it *required* a valid US zipcode even when the country was specified as
non-US. They corrected the problem and sent an apologetic email saying that
their web developer was very red-faced about this because he, too, was
British!

Of course, this isn't specifically related to the US. We used to be able to
order online at Debenhams (in the UK, a popular wedding registry site) and
they disabled the option - when we ran into this they first tried to say
they never allowed it but after I gave them an order number that proved they
had done they said they didn't for fraud reasons. Hopefully they've
rectified this by now.

Andy.

We had the same dilemma but in the UK when my US husband to be and I (UKC) married in the UK.

In the end, to make things really simple 'cos we knew we'd be moving to the US in the near future, we requested cash as presents.

Wedding presents were sent as cheques, cash to our home. In fact, we received a combination of cheques and cash in Pounds, US Dollars and Japanese Yen (cash only).

Some of the foreign currency was taken to a bureau de change to convert to Pounds Sterling but some of the US Dollars we saved for our move. Marks & Spencers offered a competitive rate for currency exchange. No commission charges. At least that was the case until middle of this year when I left the UK.

You might feel uncomfortable asking for cash but if your wedding guests appreciate your situation, and that's it's rather unusual, hopefully they'll co-operate despite breaking with tradition and custom.

That's my 5c/7pence.

I set up the registry in March 2002, and we got married (in France, religiously) in May 2002. So, as of May 2002, BB&B still required a US address or a phone call to complete the transaction. I did call them to inquire about it, but I didn't complain about it because anyway our BB&B registry was not used very much by non-US residing people. It was much easier to have a registry in France (which I believe could be used from everywhere, because I did get a gift for a friend who registered at the same place.).
