A tip for getting ss# coming on k1
Just a tip from our experience...
I am led to believe that it is better to get the SS# before the marriage.
Clive came in on the 17th Sept. and the next day we applied for his SS card.
2 days later we were married and the card came in the mail a little over a
week later. If we would have waited until after we were married (says the SS
lady) we would have had to wait until we filed for adjustment, and that it
could take a while for his information to put into the system by the INS. So
on our part at least it was very quick. This is only advice based from our
experience in the Louisiana office.
Cheers

If you get an SSN before marriage
do you have to get a new one after marriage if you change your name?

No, just inform SSA of name change. There's a form for it.

THANKS Sheila.. My fiancee will be here on a K1 in February. So what
you are saying is apply for SSN as soon as she arrives, but BEFORE we
get married.
Won't the SS Card say "not eligible for employment" ???
Not that I care - I merely want her to have the number to open joint
bank accounts etc.
Thanks

This is only advice based from our experience in the Louisiana office.
Another tip from our experience.
First, I concluded it was best to wait until "after" our marriage to
get my fiancee's social security number based simply on the fact that
her name would be different after our marriage. Now if you like
dealing with government bureaucrats and "change of name" forms go
ahead and get the number "before" you get married. Secondly, the
social security "government worker" in the Louisiana office was wrong
in saying you'd have to wait until you file for AOS (if you get the
number after the marriage) because we had no such problem.

Yep if it was for that fact I probably wouldn't have a job. Thank God for lazy
and stupid people. LOL

There is no need to report your name change to SSA after marriage as
long as you work and file taxes under the maiden name. If you want to
do either under your married name, you need to apply with SSA for a
corrected SSN card in the married name. Once you receive the corrected
SSN card, show it to your employer so that they can update their
records.
Aliens need form SS-5 and document(s) that show your new name and the
current name on your SSN record and work authorization document. The
one document must also show either a photograph of the person or
information that can be compared with the SSN record e.g., age, date of
birth, or parents' names.

It also helps if you don't limit yourselves from reading only posts dealing with your particular stage of the process but all posts and familiarize yourself with the entire process. Even if it means only reading the format for adjusting and not going indepth.

No, it will say "Valid for work only with INS authorization" Mine
says that and I've been working quite happily for 6 months. The EAD is
the authorization mentioned..

From what I understand here in Phoenix (I got my SSN 13 months ago)
you needed to provide documentation that you were lawfully in the
country. In my case the unexpired K-1 Visa in my passport was the
necessary proof. If I had left it until after the 90 days they would
have required the AOS filing receipt or an EAD as relevant proof.
Maybe it was your local office that was wrong and you were lucky? (or
did you apply before the 90 days on the K-1 Visa expired?)

We applied about a month after she arrived, so yes, her K-1 visa had
not yet expired.
