EAD and SSN are 2 separate issues.

You can work without further documentation only as long as you are in
lawful K-1 status (i.e. as long as your I-94 is unexpired ; i.e. within
the first 90 days after you enter the US).
After that, you need an EAD in order to work.
Regarding your driving license, you can exchange a Canadian one for a
US one in pretty much any state.
I am from France, and France only has agreements with 8 US states
(excluding New York state, but I live in NYC, and the subway is good
enough).
Most countries in the world don't have any agreement with US states,
and most immigrants must start from scratch.
I think that Canada has agreement with the 50 states.
France and Germany have limited agreements, and the rest of the world
doesn't have any.

Thanks very much. Thats very informative. I will get my driver's
license after I have my bank account opened.
So I do need to apply for EAD after I start I-485.
Lets say if I already have a SSN with me before processing I-485, do I
also need to do anything about SSN again after I get my EAD done?
:-( sorry

Yes, you did ; and I did post my response:

lawful K-1 status (i.e. as long as your I-94 is unexpired ; i.e. within
the first 90 days after you enter the US).

You may ask SSA to remove the mention "authorized to work only with DHS
authorization" once you get your US citizenship (possibly after you get
your GC - don't know, I didn't do that). In that case, your Social
Security Card will allow you to work ; otherwise, you would have to
show your green card or proof of US citizenship.
Besides that, you don't have to deal with social security until you
plan to retire.
Btw, that is only optional, you do not have to remove the mention.
In any case, you wouldn't deal with SSA while the AOS is pending, only
potentially once it is approved.
No need to contact SSA when you get your EAD.

The first SS card you get will have a legend on it that says "valid for work only with INS authorization". Once you have your SS card, you don't need to do anything else with it until you have your GC in hand. At that point, you can get an updated SS card which does not carry the legend.
Just curious, anyone, does the legend still say INS? Ours did back in 2004.

You're going to be hoarse before long, Rene.

No you have SSA remove it after you obtain permanent residency.

ol,
And the SS card does not allow you to work if it does not have the
legend on it. The legend is nothing more than a reminder to employers
that they need to verify the employee's work authorization status,
something that they need to do anyway. The SSA sometimes slips up and
issues a card without the legend when it should have the legend. That
error does not mean that the person is work authorized or that they do
not have to show evidence of their work authorization status.

What I meant is that you don't have to prove additional evidence to
comply with the I-9 requirement.

I just went through all of this as a canadian (now thankfully married to my American) and waiting for my residency interview next week.
1) the medical if done by a properly authorized (by US consulate) physician in Canada does not need to be re-done if your interview is within a year
2) You will get I-94 in your passport from the immigration officer when you enter with K-1 visa. Make sure they staple it into your visa. Do not leave again US without permission (advance parole!!)
3) As soon as possible after your wedding get your paperwork started I-485, advance parole (FOR MULTIPLE VISITS),EAD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It takes at least three months after the paperwork is filed!
4) you cannot work in US until you get your EAD. You cannot get a SSN without EAD, and even with it Social Security will send all of your paperwork including id and EAD copies, back to Homeland Security for verification (another month of waiting!)
5) Once again do not leave without Advance Parole papers! Take these to the US border office at Canadian Border, and make sure they give you An arrival departure record (for multiple trips) stapled to your passport!
6) Some US banks will let you open an account with passport/drivers license (especially in Florida) some won't. Bank of America does. Florida even has a special driver's license for us Canadians (valid in Florida only).
7) Start working on pictures and more pictures. Especially with family, & during different seasons. You will also need notarized affidavits from family and friends (min. 3) as to your relationship. (ie you two are in love!) Get as much as you can in both your names, ie phone, rent/mortgage etc.
8) You sit back and wait and wait and wait.
9) If you need specific answers, go to your local immigration office. (which of course, may be hundreds of miles away!) You cannot call them! you can only make an appointment through INFOPASS. infopass.uscis.gov - Any general questions can be handled through the immigration call center (number available at uscis.gov, IF the computers are working.
10) register with uscis for email notification! Case status service at uscis.gov although, with the website construction it is at present useless.
11) NOTE: they keep changing the rules!
Hope that this helps!.
