Hi,

My wife's passport is expiring in mid-January. She has the I-551 stamp in her current
passport. I will get a new passport for her. We will be travelling outside the USA in
December and I don't think we will get the actual green cards before our departure.
Can she still use the I-551 stamp in her old passport to come back to the US?

Yes, if she is allowed to keep her old passport, the one with the Temp. I-551 stamp
in it. Some contries will not issue a new passport until you turn the old one in.

My guess would be that she can, given that when you have an actual visa in an old
passport, it's okay to travel with that if you show both the old and new passports.
