Default Postponed Oath Ceremony Twice and Missed the Third Notification: Potential Problem Ahead?

I had to postpone my oath ceremony twice due to traveling on company
businesses. The third notice came as a registered mail while I was
again on a business trip and therefore was returned to ISN (in other
words I never received it except a notice saying that the mailed could
not be delivered and was returned to sender). Having returned from my
trip and saw the notice, I went and talked with the local INS office
and was told that since I had reschedueled twice already and that I
never responded to the third notification, they now had to return my
case to the officer with whom I had my original interview. They
warned me that everything now is up in the air and that they could do
nothing about it.

Has anyone had experiences similar to mine or heard of similar cases?
What could be the worse end scenario here? What should I do at this
point except passive waiting?

Thanks for any suggestions and information.

PS. I used my office address for all my INS correspondences. My the
last (third notice somehow got sent to my home address)and therefore
there was no way for my office to notify me during my business trip.)
