my immigration lawyer told me that my fiance (from the UK) and i can get married on a
tourist visa and that it is legal. Has anyone done this because we are going on a
cruise next August to Canada, Nova Scotia and New England and we figured we would
just get married on the ship then have our honeymoon at the same time.Would we
encounter any problems with Immigration when we arrive back in NY?

What your attorney was probably telling you is that if your fiancée came to "visit"
and the two of you got married INSIDE the US, you can file for the spousal visa and
adjustment of status. You can find information about that at Doc Steen's site

go to the section called Tourist Adjustment.

However, if you and your fiancée get married outside the US and then you try to
reenter the US, chances are your new wife would probably be denied entry, because as
your spouse it would be obvious she was not entering as a tourist, but has immigrant
intent. Getting married on your cruise would not be a good idea.

Hi, yes you can marry while on tourist visa but it MUST BE INSIDE THE USA...we did
this ourselves...if you marry outside USA your fiance will NOT be permitted to enter
back with you, because once you are married the new spouse MUST REMAIN WITHIN THE USA
while you file for 'adjustment of status.' After the AOS is through, then I'd go on
the cruise. good luck*
