I'm back! And SS ??
Greg and I have had some catching up time and I'm back to work but without as much computer access so i won't be on as often as before... but I'm sure I'll still have a million questions and do my best to help out others as well...
Here's the first... greg and I went in today to get his SS# and I guess his i-94 hasn't been entered into the system yet. What I need to know is, how long does it usually take to be entered in and if it more than two weeks and he still hasn't been entered, is there someone we can contact to make sure they will do it soon?
I'm going to go back and reads ome of the SS experiences, but thought I'd pose the question anyway... thanks!

It looks like this varies from area to area.
If you just post where you applied for SSN you may get more useful information.
When I applied for SSN the SS office (Burien/Seattle) told me it would take about 4 weeks to get my application checked with the INS and another 2 weeks for them to give me the number.
They were right, it took almost exactly 6 weeks to get the SSN.
I read from others that they got their's in a week though.

Hi All!
Yes and no. Yes in that you should apply for a replacement SSN card in your
married name after getting married. No in that you shouldn't wait that long
to apply for the original SSN card.
If you arrive as a K-1, go apply as soon as you get off the boat. It can
takes weeks or sometimes months for SSA to verify your status with INS.
Your K-1 status is only good for 90 days and SSA won't issue the SSN if you
are within 14 days of your status expiring, so that gives you 76 days.
Now what happens after then is that you are supposed to be able to get the
SSN or replacement card with the EAD card from INS, but I haven't heard
anyone say lately that they were able be issued an SSN or replacement card
after the 90 days were up using the EAD card before or after getting
married. Plus the status of the EAD card will also need to be verified.
You need to apply in person at any SSA office, with proof of age, identity,
your work authorized alien status and form SS-5 for the original SSN. Birth
certificate, passport and unexpired I-94 or EAD.
For the replacement card after getting married, you can mail in or take in
the application to any SSA office (unless you live in the Brooklyn, NY
area), identity, your work authorized alien status and form SS-5. For
identity you need document(s) that show the current name on your SSN record
and your married name.

Hi All!
It can take weeks or months for SSA to verify status with INS. If SSA
needs to have it done manually, you need to give INS 20 working days
(basically a month) to reply. After 20 working days you can request SSA
follow up with INS.
Some people have gone to their local INS to asks what's up and try to get
the status into the system. Don't think they have had much luck doing
this, but doing something beats doing nothing.
You could call Dominos. Probably do you about as good as calling anyone
and at least you would have pizza. LOL

Anyone can apply. Being issued the SSN is another matter. If you don't
have a visa status that is authorized to work based on status alone, i.e.
K-1 or one that is authorized to work, but needs specific authorization,
i.e. K-3 with EAD card, then you need a valid nonwork reason to be issued an
SSN. Your best hope for a valid nonwork reason is your state requires an
SSN to issue a drivers license.

Hi Mike.. well I had a phone call back from the local SSA Office yesterday morning having called the 1-800 number to check the status of my SSN application as a K1er..
Was told that it was taking 6-8 weeks having been initially told it could be 20-45 days.. I asked if it was worth me calling next week to check and was told no.. Problem is I need the SSN to get the DMV to issue me a Virginia licence.. The only other option I have is to have SSA to fax DMV with the reason I cant be issued the SSN.. ITs so totally frustrating as so much hinges on it..
Oh well Patience I suppose..

Hi All!
I would believe what the local office more than the 800#. When you called
the 800# you might have been talking to someone in California. The local
office would have a better idea of how long it takes INS to get back to
them.
Some of the 9/11 terrorists had be issued VA drivers licenses with SSNs, so
just like the discussion of the INS online status, government agencies just
love bad press, so they make it hard on everyone to cover their butt. The
problem was DOS and INS letting them in the country not them having SSNs or
drivers licenses.

We applied in St. Paul for Dave's SSN. They told us 60 days, it has been more than 90. SSN and INS have been their usual very helpful selves (NOT!) and after repeated attempts to get any info, I finally wrote to our congressman. He has promised to look into the matter and we are currently waiting to hear something/anything.
I am very frustrated as I am pregnant and a job for Dave would be a very helpful thing right now.
Good luck with your SSN adventure.

Re: I'm back! And SS ??
It took 6 weeks before I got my SSN in Ohio. That was in December.
Normal procedure these days.
