I-751 , expired 2 year GC and travel abroad
Hello,
Just wanted to share my experience, if it could be of help to others.
I filed i-751 for removal of conditions on Feb.26, 2006 (to Nebraska -
NSC ).
I haven't received the 10 y card yet.
I received NOA and the "usual" yellow letter asking for the original
expired green card.
I sent in the original card as the letter requested.
But I'd like to travel abroad in August, so I called INS and asked -
what would happen if the card has not arrived yet - would the copy of
the 2 year card and the 1 year extention of status letter be enough to
travel - they said " I wished you haven't sent the card to NSC, no
matter what the letter said".
I can't travel only with the copy of an expired card and extension
letter, BUT I could set an appointmnet with my local office, get a
stamp in my pasport, and then travel, so....
there is a solution,,,,a bit clumsy,,,,but still...!
So, don't send in your expired green cards, no matter what the yellow
letter says.
Good luck to all!

it doesn't matter if your orgional green card is being sent back to NSC for 10 year card processing.
You can go to your local office and get an I-551 stamp and travel without problem. Without your orgional green card, you won't be able to get your 10 year card. they have to collect it no matter what

The 'clumsy' work around is nonetheless the prescribed work around. make an InfoPass appointment, go get a stamp.
I wouldn't really *want* anyone to be able to travel on a copy of an old green card.
Remember that the 1-800# operators often don't know what they are saying.

The official line is that the NOA and your current foreign passport is
fine. If you are of the nervous kind, you could make an infopass for an
I-551 stamp and pray you don't meet an officer who explains you that
you don't need it as you have the NOA.
