Here to whine again
Well shoot, here I am all set to finally go in and do my written/road
tests for the Idaho driver's licence in my town despite the fact I
still can't parallel park. I decided first to make sure of what I all
needed so I gave DMV a call this morning. In addition to the usual
documents I now need a clearance letter from DMV (U.S. version),
Ministry of Transportation (Canadian version) of a clean driving
record. I told her I have been driving for 27 years, so this really
sucks. She just laughed and said she knows. Well if there is any
comfort they don't keep your Ontario licence, they just want to look
at it. Geeze, if I fail at least I can drive around on my old one for
awhile longer and pray I don't get caught.

I know that in Wisconsin you can just use your German DL to obtain your
Wisconsin DL, just like it would be changing from one state's DL to another.
You might want to check if there are states having the same deal with Canada
and move there for a week. I know for a WI and MN License residency isn't
required.
This might be a way out if you don't pass the test.

You can always hope Idaho will be like Oklahoma, in that they tell you over
the phone that if you hold a Canadian (Ontario) drivers license you need to
take the written / road tests again, but when you show up to do it, they
just exchange your Ontario license for an Oklahoma one!
Good luck...

Re: Here to whine again
just been having a Grrrrrrr session of my own over this driving test shit.
Having driven in the UK for many years without so much as a bump these
jobsworths here want me to take a test. They wouldnt even let me skip the
30 day "practice driving" haha !@#%! ha what a joke and also a total insult
too. Can understand it for my 16 and 20 yr olds who have never driven but
holy shit i would love to see some of them drive on British roads. German
drivers are also excused the tests in Michigan and yet when i searched the
inet for statistics on German driving tests and UK driving tests i really
couldnt see that the German one was any harder.
Yep Margaret it does suck !

The worst is that I lived in Holland, 2 miles from Germany, speak German,
did grocery shopping in Germany, practically lived and drover there, without
fines or accidents and still had to take the test. Whereas a Dutch license
is far more difficult to get than the German one. It doesn't make sense, but
I think German diplomats just put in some more effort.
