Getting Married while on a L-1 Visa
Hi
My future husband and I work in the same company (that is how we met). He is in the DC office and I'm in the European HQ.
My work has offered me a L-1 Visa option to go and work in DC and be with him.
Should we decide to get married, would the L-1 Visa cause any problems?
Thank you in advance for any wise words.

Re: Getting Married while on a L-1 Visa
Adjusting status from a dual-intent visa like L-1 or H-1B is usually pretty
straightforward. The only real issue is whether or not to apply for general
work authorization when filing for permanent residency (to cover the period
until he gets the greencard) or just keep working for the sponsoring
company. There are issues with travel abroad that come into that same
equation but you can research those closer to the time.
One thing to consider, though, is whether it would be easier to get married
before moving back to the US. That way you would probably (assuming that you
are a resident in the foreign country) be able to file directly with the
consulate (so called DCF) and cut out the non-immigrant visa altogether.
Andy.

Re: Getting Married while on a L-1 Visa
Thanks Andy
Indeed. I am Belgian, living in France. Therefore, I'm a resident here. We were thinking of getting married here, but were just considering our options (we haven't know each other THAT long, so were thinking of spending some time together in DC first) but we're pretty sure about our future together, so maybe we should get married in France first, then I can go work in DC.
Anyway, we're still figuring it out as we speak.
but thank you for the advice! I'll keep you all posted!

I did exactly the same thing - the benefit seemed to be at the time that it was the fastest way for us to be together in the US. I'm not sure how long DCF would take from Belgium.
The other benefit is if for some reason your AOS is denied, it had no effect on your current L-1 status. We have had no problems so far.
Cheers,
Peter
