EXPERIENCE: My wife recently used Re-Entry Permit to Enter the USA (in
I wanted to share my wife's experience when she entered the USA with her
Re-Entry Permit through Atlanta. We were returning to the USA from
Zurich.
INS Inspector: How long were you out of the country?
My wife: Seven days.
INS Inspector: Is this the first time you are using the Re-Entry
Permit?
My wife: Yes.
INS Inspector: OK ... I do not see any other stamps. Why did you
get it? Where is your national passport?
My wife: My Russian passport expired and renewal takes a long time.
INS Inspector: Understand.
My wife: I will use my American passport next time. My
naturalization interview is on Tuesday, February 25th.
INS Inspector (to me): When did you become a US citizen?
Self: About 20 years ago. I still vividly remember my naturalization
ceremony in Brooklyn, NY.
INS Inspector (smiling): Welcome to the US. Thank you.

My experience re-entering the US with my K-3 via LA airport 2/18/2003
INS Inspector 1 : Are you here to get married?
Me : No, I'm already married. I have a K-3, sir, not a
K-1.
INS Inspector 1 : (to INS Inspector 2) Joe, what's a K-3?
INS Inspector 2 : (to INS Inspector 1) It's the spouse visa.
INS Inspector 1 : (to me) Is your mother married to a US Citizen?
Me : No, I AM married to a US Citizen.
INS Inspector 2 : (to INS Inspector 1) Miguel, you're thinking K-2.
She's THE spouse. She's the one married to a US Citizen.
INS Inspector 1 : Oh!
Moral of this story? Be prepared to insist that your K-3 entitles you
to leave and re-enter the US just in case you got the same guy I did.
FYI, all inspectors names have been changed.

How long does it take? Does the Consulate handle the renewal, or does it
get processed in Russia?
