Default EAD wait time

Whats peoples view/experience during the waiting time..

1) Worth doing unpaid work e.g volunteer?

2) Starting job search half way into waiting time? Hopefully allows start of work as soon as EAD arrives.

3) Is it illegal to apply for job and check "legal to work in USA" without EAD in hand?

Cheers

Volunteering and unpaid work are not the same thing. The former is fine, the latter is not.

The EAD takes between 60-90 days to arrive after you apply. Unless you want a job at McDonald's, I suggest you start your job search the day you apply!

No, it's not illegal - in the sense that you are allowed to lie to any company when completing a job application. The risk comes when they ask for proof of your ability to work legally... and you have none!

I agree with Ian, unless the application asks is you are a USC. Never, ever, lie about that. It will come back to bite you much later, and you may not ever be able to become a USC.

Thanks Ian. Point 2 - If I start applying the day I apply for EAD, what happens if I get a quick offer and I have no EAD?

You can verbally accept the position, but you can't sign anything. The employer will simply have to wait until you have an EAD in hand before you can start work. As I alluded to earlier, you can't "work for free".

You should review your earlier thread... there's a lot of good information in it. It's been a few months, so perhaps you forgot!
