Default EAD to SSN

Just for your info. My wife got her SSN card in the mail today 1-18-03
It took her 60 days to get her EAD in the mail. We filed for her
SSN 2 days before Christmas and today we got it. She is here on the k3
visa from the Philippines. I told her to keep her EAD with the SSN
in case some employer happens to ask if she has INS permission.
It says on the card it is permitted to work only with INS permission

Hi All,

Well if she has a restricted SSN card, the INS EAD card is her work
authorization until she completes AOS and the has the I-551 stamp or card.

The employer is required to complete an INS I-9 form for each employee, so
I'm sure he will ask to see the INS EAD, since the I-9 requires work
authorization and ID. The EAD is good for both. The restricted SSN card is
worthless for that.

Take care,

Mike

so if I come in on a K-3, I can start working as soon as I receive my EAD card? even while I'm waiting for my SSN?

Also, I've heard people say that you can sometimes get your # (they will tell you what it is) before the actual card arrives in the mail... anyone know if that's true?

I am curious......(some would say odd!!...lol) if you have an unrestricted ss card, could you seek employment even without an EAD?

So long as the employer allows it. Some won't.

Yes. You can get the number by phone roughly a week before the card arrives. The application needs to be cleared by the local office first.

I would guess this depends on what you mean by "could you." If the SSA makes a mistake, I can't imagine that affords you legal rights you otherwise wouldn't have. On the other hand, if a potential employer sees a card without the INS disclaimer, I can't imagine you would need to present additional evidence that you're allowed to work.

Yep. An unrestricted SSN card can be used as a work authorization
document and then you need some type of ID, i.e. drivers license to go
along with the SSN card.

You have work authorization as soon as you have your EAD card. Now getting
someone to hire you without an SSN, even though you do have a grace period
(By IRS regulations) before you need to provide it to your employer.

Yeah, but that's only going to save you about a week before the card
arrives. Once SSA certifies the application to issue the SSN, you can call
1-800-772-1213 to get the SSN before the card arrives in the mail. This is
because all SSN cards are printed and mailed from SSA headquarters in
Baltimore, MD and someone doesn't run down to the mailbox with your SSN card
as soon as it's printed.

Take care,

Mike

Hey Mike,
I still maintain that you are too funny to work for the government!

Did you file in Chicago or at your local INS office?
